Not drinking 4 opti a day

I was, for whatever reason, given the Opti for only 1 week. Given that time frame, I just set it in my mind to do it. I added some decaf for the "supper" shake and ignored the broths and everything else.

I didn't mind it all that much, but found it sweet. The only complaint I had about it was the constipation it gave me. That was brutal. Some folks get the trots, I got the opposite.

I'm glad the OP has had some positive answers from her clinic and the great folks on here.

Remember, no matter where you go.......there you are.

Sometimes I think it's all just a conspiracy to try and sell Optifast.

Hey Lisa,

I too am on a pre-op diet. Today is day 10, surgery is in 5 days..ah! Anyway, I am not drinking Opti-fast but I do have to have 4 protein shakes a day as well. I can also have fat-free yogurt so I have been eating a ton of that, and the ones I bought have 15g of protein in them so I am usually between 70-90g of protein by the middle of the day. I asked my NUT if I really needed to do all 4 shakes since I wa****ting my protein goal so easily and she said if I could get them in to do sobecause it can help with recovery post-op and it helps makes us feel fuller so our cravings don't get the best of us. I am not familiar with Opti-fast or if it's even used for protein so if it's not, please disregard, haha.

Good luck! The first 4 days were torture, but it gets so much easier after that. I heard that so many times and didn't believe a single person but it really did get easier for me. Once you start seeing the scale moving so quickly that will give you extr incentive to keep going!

Hi folks, I just called my centre and this is what they said.

The reason for 4 opti is to get the needed calories and all the vitamins and nutrients that is needed. She said try my best to get all 4 in, but .... if I don't it is not detrimental as some people don't even do opti.

Also she said I could use ho****er just not boiling as boiling water may alter the ingredients and cook the protein. So that is fine.

And that the amount of water, tea, coffee and broth is ok too

Overheating protein is a myth. I just cooked my protein over open flames on a 650 degree grill.

The problem is with protein powder in boiling liquid. It clumps. You can avoid clumps by mixing a powder in a little lukewarm liquid to make a slurry. Then add the slurry to boiling liquid, and no clumping.

My program uses NewDirections and I have also tried Unjury and both have soups. The directions say water no hotter than 140 degrees Fahrenheit as the protein breaks down. So hot tap water should be just fine as it is rarely over 125.

Good luck.

It is better to travel and get lost...

Than never to travel at all.

I skipped a couple of doses towards the end of my 2 weeks but I think the fear is that you will not get enough protein if you only consume 3 a day. You could also try adding some sugar-free syrup, which you can get at any Starbucks for around $20 for a big bottle. Over ice with a healthy shot of sugar free caramel syrup it wasn't THAT bad.

Best of luck and remember the Opti is pretty much the worst part of your journey! You still have an appetite now so you're missing real food but you won't miss it nearly as much after surgery. At least that was my experience.
