I don't know Patty - I went into surgery feeling I really was in the best of hands. I think surgeon-wise, I was. I have no idea what is going on in that hospital. When I was in for WLS, most of the problems I had were trying to call for help for my roommate, who was unable to walk and often got left in the bathroom for over a half-hour. This time it was me and I was totally unhappy. It's a good thing that I am one of those people who will not lie around after surgery. I know I'm supposed to get up and I do it on my own, way before they send anyone in. I will recover and have a good outcome, despite their poorest efforts. Nah, I don't have the energy for lawsuits, but I really feel this should be reported. No one - absolutely NO ONE deserves to be treated like that. Despite what happened to me, it's that shaking hand above the blankets that haunts my dreams. That poor guy must have been scared out of his mind.

What's gone wrong with that place. It's supposed to be our premire hospital in Portland. Yours is not the first story I have heard on here of poor treatment and lack of adequate staff. I am loath of lawsuit talk, but sometimes that is the only thing that makes things change for an organization. Too bad it had to happen to someone as nice as you, though shouldn't be like that for anyone. At least your good surgeon got his work done and it's in there ready to do you good. You will gain your strength back. I would understand feeling that as much as you would like some justice and feel they understand their actions were unacceptable, sometimes just moving on and consentrating on your own good future is more appealing and helpful to you. Sometimes I just don't have the time, heart or desire to fight a battle even though I know I should. It's great to be on the mend and looking forward to the benefits of this battle. Good luck to your outcome!

Thanks Julia - I'm calling the trauma manager next week. He gave he his card after I demanded to speak to someone about my care. I wanted to wait until I was clearheaded to talk to him about it all. The whole stay was a big nightmare.

Thanks Diana - I demanded to talk with someone about my care and the Trauma Care Manager came to speak with me. He gave me his card so I could call him when I was feeling better. I have it here and will be calling next week. My poor surgeon was just appalled. He had written orders for sufficient pain meds for me and had no idea why they didn't give them to me. I am generally not a screaming, abusive patient, but I was pushed beyond my limit there. I hope your care is excellent and you have a good outcome. I did have a great nurse for the last few days. She was very caring and wonderful.

WOW Linda---that is horrible and is abuse and neglect! This absolutely needs to be reported not just at the hospital level but the state level. It sounds like this is not an isolated incidence but common practice. Get well soon and hope you never need to return to that hospital. Julia

Thanks Linda, I usually have my peramedic daughter checking up on me in the middle of the night and she knows several of the dept. heads since she teaches there so that may be to my advantage. But, I will make sure that I have someone with me. I read your post and that is unacceptable! I would definatly talk to the people in charge of your care-your doctor, the nursing supervisor, and the head of the Surgery/OR area of the hosp. You also need to call the Health Dept in Salem. Glad you are doing better.

Linda, I have been wondering how you were doing. I hope the pain is better. I am going to the site to read about your surgery right now. Julia

Hey Jeanette - welcome to the Oregon board. The surgeons at OHSU are very skilled and I am sure you will have a wonderful outcome. Please do make sure you take someone with you who will stay and check up on you at the hospital I have been in OHSU twice and I believe I will never go back there again unless I am absolutely dying. The hospital sucks.
Leigh Ann is a new one on me. Used to be Tara, then they added another gal, and now this is a new one. I hope it's a third staff member rather than a replacement for one of the others. They are so overworked there that things tend to fall through the cracks.

Diana - I strongly recommend that you have someone stay with you at OHSU hospital to make sure your after care is good. OHSU has some very talented surgeons and nurses, but they are short-staffed and there are major problems there. Read my post above, re: Home from OHSU and my blog entry from July 2007 and see the care (or lack thereof) I received there. You need an advocate with you.
