Questions about RNY from a future RNYer

Hi guys....I have been reading your posts and they have raised questions for me...which is exactly why I read them, so I know what to look forward to and be ready for it.

How long do you have to be on liquid diet?

2nd question...I have been reading about mushies....most of the posts I have read about mushies have been from people who have had VSG.   Jen and I are both planning on RNY, do RNYers get mushies too?  Can you give me some examples of mushies?  I read scrambled eggs...what else?

3rd question....the nausea...how long does it last?  Does the gel phenagran make you as sleepy as the pills and supposotories?  That stuff puts me under for days!

4th question...I know with RNY sugar is out.....which is why I chose this particular surgery.  My question, does that mean that the protein bars are out?  Protein drinks?  I also wonder about SF puddings etc?  Are those allowed? What brand of SF tropical popsicles do you all use?

Sorry for so many questions....but you guys are great!

Hugs,
Marsha

Hi!  I am a Lap RNY patient.  My surgery was on March 12th and I couldn't be more pleased.  The mushies are the same as with Sleeve patients.  Scrambled eggs (I didn't do well with them at first but everyone is different), cottage cheese, string cheese, very finely grated chicken or tuna salad with only the meat, mayo.  re-fried beans with cheese are awesome as well.  You can have the protein drinks and SF puddings.  I normally look for things with no more than 8 gr of sugar in them.  The liquid diet was 2 weeks post op.  I was NOT hungry but maybe got a little head hunger in the second week.  I crunched ice and popsickles for that chewing sensation.  I also used broth.

I didn't have much if any nausea.  I didn't even use my liquid loritab after I got home because it made me more neauseated (the bottle says do not take on empty stomach???).  I suffered a little pain but very little.  The 3rd day was the worse. I have lost 116 pounds and 76 of it since March 12th.  I feel so much better now and would do it again in a heartbeat!  Best decision of my life.  It has given me my life back and I can't thank WW and Dr. Walton enough.

I will PM my phone number to you if you would like to call and talk or have questions any time.  I hope you can join us on Wednesday at Bricktown Brewery at 6:15 for meet and greet time.  We always have fun.

For two weeks-WegihtWise rules are what I'm listing. Rita (Cricket) can list more.

2nd question...I have been reading about mushies....most of the posts I have read about mushies have been from people who have had VSG.   Jen and I are both planning on RNY, do RNYers get mushies too?  Can you give me some examples of mushies?  I read scrambled eggs...what else?

Yes. Fat Free refried beans, cottage cheese, etc. Lots more.

3rd question....the nausea...how long does it last?  Does the gel phenagran make you as sleepy as the pills and supposotories?  That stuff puts me under for days!

It varies. Mine lasted awhile, and no it didn't make me sleep.

4th question...I know with RNY sugar is out.....which is why I chose this particular surgery.  My question, does that mean that the protein bars are out?  Protein drinks?  I also wonder about SF puddings etc?  Are those allowed? What brand of SF tropical popsicles do you all use?

NO.  You just have to watch the sugar content and keep it below 9 grams (according to my nut). SF is allowed. SF popsicles are Edy's and Schwan's and there's another brand at Wal-Mart. They're easy to find. SF puddings are great, too. I'm hooked on Edy's SF popsicles with fruit in them.  Protein bars I buy at Wal-Mart are Atkins Advantage Peanut butter chocolate, chocolate peanut granola, double chocolate caramel..high protein and 1 gram of sugar or so. Some RNYers don't dump on sugar. I don't pu**** because I don't want to know. I dump on fats, and meat cooked in its own juice..even fish sprayed with Pam baked in a foil pouch in the oven yesterday...all grill for me now!

Remember these are just guidelines...you'll get the diet when you go to the nut.

Edit to say: NEVER be afraid to ask a question. That's why we're here!

I love the answers so far........to go a little more in depth on the mushies stuff (at least with my doc and NUT).

Green beans (canned only..no fresh from the market ones)
scrabled egg (you can sprinkle a little bit of cheese on top but at first dont use any hot sauce or salsa)
FF Cottage Cheese
SF Jello (YUCKO)
instant mashed potatoes
FF refried beans
broth (YUMMY.........NOT)
SF popsicles
those microwavable sliced baby carrots (best to mash them up and sprinkle a little S&P on them)
and of course your water and protein drinks

I have heard where some people were allowed peanut butter but you should, as stated above, check with your NUT.  Following YOUR doctor's list will best benefit YOUR success.

Thanks Dan but at WW and with Dr. Walton we are not allowed to have mashed potatoes.  They want our mushies to have protein in them.  The jello and SF popsicles will count as your liquids.  I know you will get a list from our NUT also.

Thank you all so much for your answers!  This is exactly what kind of information I am looking for...my niece, Jen, is going to be pre-op real soon, and we were just wondering what to expect.  She is a really picky eater, hopefully this will change..I doubt it though.  I am so excited for her, I wish my surgery was lurking, I want it so badly.

You all are a great help!  Send any information you can....

Hugs,
Marsha

I'm not going to answer for you cuz I'm a patient of Dr Warnock and his diet also differs from WW and Dr Walton, but I do want to wish you and Jen both the best of luck with your RNY~ I know you'll both be extremely successful!  I'm sending you prayers and positive thoughts!

No potatoes, green beans or carrots in mushy stage with WeightWIse. No potatoes period. The green beans and carrots come in the "healthy foods for life" stage (stage 3). Baby carrots HURT me the first time I ate them, so I waited several weeks and tried them again. They still don't rock, but they're tolerable.
