Weight Loss after Lap Band

Ok, I have a general question, not sure if it's an easy one or not.  I had my 1st consult w/ Dr. Mcginty yesterday and my weight is 301 bmi 44.  I'm interested in the Lap Band only.  He told me that the most I probably would lose is about 80 lbs or 50% of my weight which would put me at 225?  I don't get that.  I've seen plenty of plp here lose way more than that on Lap Band.  My target weight goal is 150 which is what he says I should weigh for my height.  He says I probably will plateau, but then again everyone is different.  What do you guys think?  I've seen some on here lose over 100 lbs and more on the Lap Band.  Not sure what to think.

Hi, Everything I have ever read on the Lap-Band System says the following:

Estimated weight loss is approximately 40 - 50% of one's excess weight to be achieved over 2 years.

At the FDA Site, this is stated:

In the U.S. study, the average weight loss was 36% of a patient’s excess weight three years after the device was implanted.

That's what the NORM is. That's not to say that a person can't lose more...or even less. But 50% is the norm.

Best of luck in your decision!

Lapband in the US is "relatively" new...5/6 years.  I am 7 weeks out from my lapband surgery and have lost 46 pounds.  I am not sure where they got the numbers/stats from, but I will prove them wrong!  The last 4 weeks I have lost slower, but haven't worked out as I should be.  (only walking)  In my opinion, we can do whatever we set out minds to.  I will lose 100% of my weight and hit my goal of 138.  It's as much a psychological/emotional game as it is a physical game.  Maybe even more psychological/emotional.  Add me if you want.  I will answer anything you want to know about my process. I hope to be down 50% of my desired loss in 2 months out!!!!!!!!  Getting close!

Good Luck!

I'm totally with you Cheri!  Dr. Mcginty said that I was a good candiate for the Lap Band , but he seems to think i'll probably go as low as 225.  That's not good enough for me.  I can and will come closer to my target weight as close as i can.  I guess he wants me to know the expectations.

Thanks!!!   I think the docs want to be safe so they aren't sued due to ones inability to lose all they want to or might have been told they can.  Kind of like the lawsuits against tobacco companies or McDonalds!  lol

The stats your doc is quoting are OLD!  Go to the main lapband forum and you'll see tons (pun intended) of people who have achieved their goal or better.   Anyone willing to work their band can achieve success. Cindy
