Anyone still smoke up until the day of surgery?

... looks like everyone is correct here, yet different strokes for different folks. i know of 2 ladies on chantril and ,yes, it is very expensive, even the co pay is $40.00, BUT they felt it was better than buying cigarettes. ... for ME, i smoked heavily for over 20 years. i tried many things from hypnosis, gums, acupuncture, rx meds, otc meds, etc. i did somethings radical for me,, ...i looked at photos of lung cancer... really scared me. .i still look at them.....the #one cause of death in women today, is LUNG cancer...not breast cancer....
and it is the #one most PREVENTABLE disease by quitting. ... look it up on the internet, anywhere.... or i use quit-smoking-stop.com (lung cancer photos). ... i do not think anyone wants this in their body..... especially if you are preparing for a "new " one
....smoking also ,as you know, puts you at a higher risk at surgery with the anesthesia, and slower healing process.... i feel, for me, that quitting smoking was the best things I ever did ....if i was smoking and on my way to surgery and did not stop and got away with it.....i personally would keep smoking which is the most dangerous things to do..but that is me.... save your health, longevity, skin and money by quitting smoking...overall, it makes problems worse as you age and then you have respiratory problems which are incurrable..... you a strong lady
i am s ure you will do the right thing.....luv, hugs and best wishes, christina I CARE

ya know what else?..you quit smoking now and you will have to deal with less after surgery...then you can concentrate of your new way of eating and enjoying life instead of worrying about smoking or not...plus, the wls is losing weight, right.?.... well you wont put on extra weight ,like sooo may do, from quttiing smoking.... so, that will be the GIFT you receive from doing so. love, hugs and best wishes, christina

deb,
Call the customer service number on the back of your insurance card. they may be able to direct you to the perscription programs that they have that can offer you discounts or free medication. Many different insurance carriers offer this option. Another idea is calling the 1-866-697-8487 its the NYS smoker quit line. here is what it offers:
The New York State Smokers’ Quitline offers:
- FREE starter kit of Nicotine Patches, Gum or Lozenges for eligible NYS smokers
- Trained Quitline Specialists offering help with quit plans
- Information about local stop smoking programs
- Informational taped messages
Debi........please don't be so hard on yourself. You are going through some big changes. The only time you are a failure is when you give up, and obviously you aren't giving up. You can do it. I have no easy answers for you other than you appear to be a very strong person and I know you can make it. Since we are going to be almost roomies, let me know if there is anything at all that I can do to help you. My email is [email protected] and my AIM name is tessie5995.

My surgeon had one patient(for the lap-band)lied about giving up smoking and actually have a cigarette on the way to the hospital before her operation. He didnt know any of this and took her word that she quit awhile before the operation.
The reason he knows is because her husband told on her once complications started happening during the operation. They couldn't stablize her breathing during the operation, she never got the lap-band b/c they couldn't operate w/out her stable.
Long story short she ended up having an emergency tracheomtomy on the table to save her life.
She is fine now (no lap-band though) but just has a slit of a scar on her throat. Fun stuff.

WOW!
Don't sound to fun! Well its been over 24 hrs since I had one. My surgery is July 19th. I hope that is enough time to clear me out somewhat. I had neck surgery in 97 and smoked up until the day of surgery. They told me to quit then too. I didn't even try back then. I have been wanting to quit for sometime now....this just gave me that xtra push.
I'm actually doing pretty well today. I went to Tops and bought a big bag of sugarless candy....it helps! LOL

Debi!
Great job! you can do this. thats 2 days down. whoo hoo
Trick that i learned that helps: the average craving lasts 2 minutes. stare at the clock for the 2 minutes. what has been found that is waiting for the craving to disapear with out any sence of time tends to make the craving longer than it is.
Another idea. Fabreeze everything and rewash your clothing. this will help eliminate the odor/ trigger smell. you will be amazed at the diiference,
You may also start to notice by the 3rd day that the cravings will start to decrease. I want to let you know because not many people tell you is that you can still get cravings for a couple years after you quit but NOT like what you are having now.
