anyone heard?

has anyone here gone into rny surgery with a pre-existing hernia?  would this slow down post-surgical weight loss?  my doctor may not want to repair mine at the same time as wls

Hi, yes, I had a hernia that my surgeon repaired at the same time as my WLS.  It doesn't slow the weight loss down.  I would ask the surgeon since it seems most surgeons will do the repair at the same time. Good luck, Sue

HELLO, I DO HAVE A SLIDING HIETAL HERNIA, I WANT TO HAVE IT FIXED DURING  MY SUGERY BUT MY PCP DOCTOR SAID WEGHT LOSS WOULD FIX IT, HOWEVER I'M GOING TO ASK MY SURGEON IF IT SHOULD BE FIXED DURING MY SURGEY. AS FOR IT SLOWING DOWN WEIGHT LOSS I'M NOT SURE, BUT I'M GOING TO ASK MY SURGEON THAT ALSO. CHERI

thanks sue and cheri cheri- let me know what your surgeon says my doctor had me do a swallow study to see the location and size of my hernia.  i haven't met with him since my test but he did mention that whether or not he repaired it during wld would be determined after he reviews the test results.  someone else on here had mentioned that they developed a hernia post wls and that it tends to slow down weight loss.  don't know if that is good info or not.

Weight loss will definitely fix the hiatal hernia. I also have had no acid reflux and gerd since surgery. That's two years now.

thanks for the info marie. i wanted dr. cerabona but my insurance dictates dr. yatco. he seems great and i don't have a problem with it.  just that i heard so much about dr. cerabona. hopefully since it is a two man surgery he will be in the room or dr. k who i've also heard great things about.  i also have extreme gerd.  i am going to ask dr. if it might intensify in the beginning post-op. i've heard some comments on here from people who haven't had previous gerd say that they got it post-op.  know anything??

I don't know what kind of hernia you have, but I should mention that mine was an umbilical hernia at my belly button which he repaired at the time of my WLS.  He did mention that it was possible that it would reoccur at some point later on, but if it did, he could easily repair it again.
