I thinking about having the gastric bypass surgery and went to Doc Cooperstone for a consult. Does anyone know of this surgeon?

I met with him; he only does OPEN surgery...not laparoscopic. Longer healing, more pain, etc...but do your homework. I know someone from this board who loved him. I went with Dr. Shawn Garber because I only wanted lap. Good luck -Karen

Love DR. C!  Had my surgery two years ago, down 139 pounds, best after care!  He really cares, would not have wanted closed.  Dr. C explains when it is open he can see everything, I know people who had problems with closed.  Would do it again, scar very light.  Love my new life.  Go to his support groups.  He is the best!

I had consults with Dr. Brathwaite (Smithtown), Dr. A'daniel (Bayshore), Dr. Cooperstone (Syosset)  and Dr. Ahmad (Port Jefferson).  I chose Dr. Ahmad who does his surgery lap.  Dr. Cooperstone in addition to only performing this procedure OPEN also inserts a plastic ring around the end of the esophogus to restrict the passage of food into the new stomach forcing you to chew your food thoroughly. (so far he's the only one I heard of who does this).  I have heard many negative remarks about this additional feature and did not want the choking aspect involved with my recovery.  It's enough to get used to the food restriction with your new smaller stomach pouch.  I do advocate for Fern, she is in charge of Dr. Cooperstone's support meetings and is the best by far.  The meetings are small and intimate in comparison to other doctors.  I like Dr. Cooperstone and have heard positive comments about his care but I would research the method he performs and compare to other doctors first.  You will find advocates for many surgeons by patients who have had success.  My scars are minimal with the lap procedure, I can hardly notice them.  The open scar goes straight down the middle of your stomach and is long.  With lap, it looks like a cat scratched you and that's about it.  I had no drains after surgery to be removed and was up and walking within hours after the procedure.  There is no guarantee with any surgeon or procedure.  It's all a risk and what you are willing to endure for the prize (end result) ,all of us feel it is worth it either way.
