Revisions to Gastric Bypass

I had bypass two years ago and my results were great and no complications at all. Two people I know had the surgery after me by a different surgeon and their results were not the same. They are probably half way to where they want to be, they both developed hernias. The doctors are affiliated with the same hospital (different locations) but there is definately something different between the two. Now the doctor who operated is saying that the hernia could have caused the slow down in weight by creating a bubble between the bypass and the bladder. Has anyone heard of this or know of anyone who has a revision done to the bypass?

The typical revisons to the RNY are proximal to distal, making the pouch smaller or closing a stretched out stoma, and for those that regained lots of weight or who are still morbidly obese after they had their RNY....a RNY to DS revision. There is "folk" lore on the forums about how after hernias are repaired that weight loss will start up again. But there are 2 issues with that theory, the first is that there is no major scientific data (at least not that I'm aware) that support it, and most people who have abdominal surgery lose their appetites for a short period of time, which can lead to a time of weight loss. I hope your friend gets the heps she/he needs. Scott

Hi, I know Dr. Cooperstone only does the surgery open. I am not sure which other surgeon who are talking in the North Shore system, but this other surgeon probably did it lap. not open. I have never heard of an insicional hernia. I I am assuming this is the hernia you are referring too) slowing down weight loss, it doesnt make any sense. All a insicional hernia is is a weakening in the adbominal wall that causes your bowel to push through. If anything having a insicional hernia would make you lose weight b/c you feel like crap from having your bowels sticking out and are in pain, hence causing loss of wanting to eat. The surgery isnt magic sometimes people are just not being truthful w/their diets that is all. Dont know if I was any help!
