Vitamin D

I am still pre-surgery. I had my initial consultation Nov. 11th; my pre-op lab work, ekg, barium swallow, and chest x-ray on Nov. 13th; my nutritionist consult on Nov. 18th; any my psych eval on Nov. 19th. I received a letter from my surgeon's office today that said my lab work came back and everything was fine except that my vitamin D was low. There was a prescription enclosed for Vitamin D (one pill a week for the next 6 weeks) and then it said after the 6 weeks to start Caltrate 600 + D. Although I don't have a surgery date yet (I am waiting for a call back from the surgeon's office to make sure they've received all the stuff they need), I was curious to know if that low vitamin D means that I will have to put off surgery for at least 6 weeks? Has anyone else had anything similar to this experience. I know I can call the doctor's office Monday and find out, but I was hoping maybe someone on here has had a similar situation or has had low vitamin D.

Honestly vitamin D deficiencies are much more common than you might think. Call your Dr's office Monday, but doubt that this would impede your progress.

Good luck and welcome!

Hi! Sounds like you are almost there!

No, the vitamin D defeciency won't prolong the wait. I also got the same letter in the mail with my prescription. I am having surgery in 12 days and the Dr told me to just keep taking the vitamin D! It might be in my head, but I feel like I feel better since I started taking it.

Good luck! I hope that you get a surgery date soon!

Thanks to both of you for replying so quickly. You've made me feel much better about it. I am really hoping and praying to have surgery over Christmas Break because I'll be out of school for 2 full weeks, so hopefully I wouldn't have to take much time off of school.

Good luck with your surgery in 12 days. I wish you the best and will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Just a note:

Caltrate is calcium carbonate, which isn't very bioavailable in an RNY tummy  (I say this as I don't remember what surgery you are having..).

Rather, you need calcium citrate.  Most formulations have extra Vitamin D, but you will most likely need an additional D supplement postop.  I recommend vitalady.com for your postop D needs, as that script you will be taking isn't very bioavailalbe in RNY guts, either (but is fine for normal guts).
