Hello everyone out there.  I am new to the board, so please bear with me on trying to get this posted.  Here is my problem:

I am 5 days post op.  I feel great!  I am having the biggest problem getting in protein.  It all tastes so bad to me.  I've tried mixing it with milk, pudding mix, jello, but just can't seem to make it where I can stand the taste.  I'm scared if I don't get it in I will get sick.  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Why do they make protein in a powder and not a pill?  Im soooooooo frustrated.

Each protein powder tastes different from the next - I tried 20 and finally found 1 I liked... so keep trying. I like BioChems 100% Whey protein and Designer Whey (Harris Teeter sells both , Wal Mart and GNC the designer whey).. if you have Smoothie King they sell a shake called "the shredder" the protein they use in that is good too but expensive. They do make protein pills, you can find them online.. some brands are very low in protein, others a little higher so check it out.

You are only 5 days out, not getting in your protein yet is the norm... it will take time. As long as you keep doing the best you can you will be fine. Eventually you will get the hang of it.

I am 4 weeks out and still having a hard time getting my protein and water in. Harries teeter has a sugar free syurp I got and have added to my protein shakes. I think the had 4 or 5 flavors. I think I have seen it at Lowes foods also. It has been around the coffee isle. Good luck!

I am still pre-op myself but I wanted to say hello and welcome to the NC forum.  I'm so sorry to hear you are having these troubles.  This isn't the first time I've heard of it happening either.  Some people that can't tolerate the protein shakes have talked about protein "bullets."  Have you heard of those or tried them?

I got my protein from the bullets mainly. I did half at a time since our bodies can only absorb around 25 g at a time. I saw them at Walmart nearthe fitness section where yoga mats and all were the other day for about 2.00 a piece. It could get costly but it is only for a short time frame until we can most of our protein from food. Hang in there.

Hi Deb,

I use the Any Whey from GNC.  I can not taste it at all in hot cocoa. I make my own hot cocoa mix and add a scoop of protien powder in each cup.  The secret is not to get the water too hot.  If it is too hot then the protien power will be wierd , kind of chewy or something and I can't drink it then.  It needs to be at a temperature that you can drink but more than lukewarm.

Hi Deb! I'mpre op but wanted to say hello and welcome! You will get alot of great advise on here. Try the protein bullets. I've heard they are much easier to get down than the powder.

Good luck and keep us posted

I did protein bullets and like Lisa, would only drink 1/2 of one at a time.  They are 42g of protein in 3 ounces and taste like a liquid jello.  The entire bullet is 176 calories.  To me, the grape and fruit punch are the best.  I bought online at this site.

I am 9 months out tomorrow and still use a half of one as a supp a few times a month when i am low on protein for the day.

Good luck!

Hi Deb,

Welcome to the NC forum. I look forward to getting to know you as you make this amazing journey. It is common to not get all of the prescribed protien in when you are early out. It take some time to 'ramp up.' As Jennifer said, there are a number of protien supplements available and it may be hit and miss until you find one that works for you. Many like the protien bullets. I couldn't stand 'em. I have a friend who disolves one into a 32 ounce bottle of water with crystal lite added and sips it all day. She does two of those a day. I have found that GNC will allow you to return and/or exchange product that you don't like. I did this a couple of times until I found one that worked for me. The one that I found was called AmericanWhey. I like the chocolate version the best. To be honest, I don't use protien powders, bullets, pills or bars anymore and really haven't since I was about 2 months post op, but everyone is different.

Wishing you all the best as you make this journey,

Barbara

Welcome to the board! I know its hard to find the right protein and yes I wi**** would of come in a pill as well!! my doctor told me that staying HYDRATED was more important for the first two weeks then trying to get the protein in. Do what your doctor tells you though. Even though I am almost 14 months out I still drink a protein shake every morning and my favorite is sold at Walmart 100% whey and I mix hazelnut sugar free syrup into it and it tastes yummy!! best of luck to you and keep on sipping!!
