I have the best Boss ever!!!!!

Now that I am getting into the "thick" of pre-op appointments, DH and I decided that I could no longer keep my surgery a secret from work. (And OH how I have tried!!)

I was a little skeptical of the reaction I would get- I work with very "outdoorsy, scientist - types" They are all very opinionated and do not suffer from any type of weight- related issues.

So I FINALLY got the guts to go into my boss's office and let her know what was going on.

Her response was "Isn't it amazing what modern medicine can do??!!" With True admiration of the process., (LOL- she is such a scientist!)

Then she proceeded to ask me very good questions about how things would be different - like my social life, and what my restrictions would be, how I "felt", what kind of reactions I was getting......etc, etc...

We had a very nice 20 or 30 minute conversation, and it was refreshing to be asked questions about how I would be affected rather than "how much weight do you have to loose" and "aren't you scared" and any horror stories that have been heard.

sooo "YEAH MY BOSS!!!"

So now if I can just get my Mom on board, I'll be in the clear!!

That is great news!  Hopefully, that will make it easier for when you have to take off early to come to our meetings, too.  You are so gutsy!  I haven't found the guts or the words for how to tell my Mom or my Dad and stepMom.

Thanks! I was really nervous, you just never know how people will react! But it does make me feel much better. It is nice to have a little cheering section!

I can't tell you what to say to your family, but all I can say is that the words will be right when you need to speak them. You are doing this for the right reasons, so how can your family not support you??

Will you be at the meeting tomorrow?

Kim,

That is just wonderful! It really does make a difference when people are truly concerned and supportive, instead of just voyeristic ... i.e., how much weight do you want to lose ... uh! it's none of your business! ...

My mother was truly concerned and frightened about my decision to look into and finally have WLS of any kind, but she has become one of my staunchist supporters. I told her I would send her the information I was gathering and I did. I also let her accompany me to any appointments and ask any questions she had. This went a long way to quelling her fears and concerns. Of course, you have to do what works for you and your mother, but I found very open communication worked for us and while I was willing to listen to her concerns, I made it clear that I wasn't doing this lightly or to find an 'easy way out,' and that I was going to proceed.

Wishing you all the best ... and what a great boss to work for!

Thanks Barb! I thought so too! It was really a pleasant surprise, and I feel energized!

I may ask my mom and sister to attend a support group meeting with me, That is really something I have not thought of before. Their fear stems from lack of knowledge, They may be more receptive to hearing about the surgery from a objective 3rd party. THANK YOU For the great idea!!!

I ALWAYS have time to goof off, have fun, and get in trouble!

I'm glad you were met with a positive attitude.  It's always a relief to me when people are accepting of my plans to have WLS.  In general, I think WLS is much more accepted than it was just five years ago, so I think people are more well informed about what it entails.

Kim,  That just rocks!  I love everything she said and asked.  Aren't you so glad you told her now?

I know, I was SO impressed. I am very fortunate to have a boss whom I adore- She is BY FAR one of my most favorite people.

So yes, I am so glad I told her. It gave me the guts to tell my sister, who (with reservations) is on board!! Yeah!!

Now, "Mission Mom"
