Billing question...I am so stressed!!
Yesterday, I got a bill for almost 1,400 bucks for the "assisting" surgeon. It said I owed that much and it was due in 2 weeks!!! Now, I already paid my surgeon, Dr. K, and it was 400 some bucks...How is this possible that the assisting would get more??? My hospital bill wasn't that much!!! I've got house taxes due next month which is a whopper, so I'm stressing pretty bad over this...What should I do?
Hey, it's a medical bill as long as you are paying something on it what can they do? Reverse the surgery, I don't think so. I would send what I could after I found out if I in fact owed it. And I would send what I could every month until it is paid. Don't stress the small stuff. I understand that medical bills are not supposed to go against your credit.
I'd find out exactly if your insurance paid him anything and if so/if not find out how he came to that figure for your balance. If you do, in fact, owe it I would'nt worry too much about it. If they wanted to collect it so bad, they would have asked for it before the surgery like most surgeons do. I think everybody in the world owes SOME medical bills.

Is that what your insurance company says you owe? Sounds like they either havent received the claim or it may still be in processing - I would call them and find out. Once you talk to the insurance call the billing office and let them know what you were told by the insurance company. Many times places bill you prior to your insurance processing, the system automatically does.

From my limited medical billing knowledge, I don't think they can bill for that, but I'm not a billing expert. You need to talk with your insurance company. They should know if this is an appropriate bill and whether it has been filed with them. The way I understand it, the surgeon's bill should cover any assistants....
I'll try to ask the billing person here at ECU if this is common pracatice and get back to you...

OK, I stand corrected.... I just talked with a friend in Surgery who says that the assisting surgeon does bill, as long as he/she is not a resident in training. Now, the assistant's bill should not be more than the primary surgeon, so you need to question that! Do call your insurance company and see what they have paid.
You should be able to make payments on the bill.

Good luck! Alice

See how the surgery was coded. If it was not coded correctly they can bill you for the full charges because they would have considered it 2 procedures instead of one. $1400 sounds like a full fee without an insurance payment.
Did you have 2 procedures when they went in? Did you know there would be another surgeon working on you?
