New Plan of Attack

Band to DS

Unfortunately, I had to delete this post due to privacy concerns.

Got a lap band in 2008. Tried hard, but didn't lose much weight & developed swallowing problems. Fought my insurance company for almost a year & finally had a band to DS revision on 5/11/12. Have now lost 125 pounds. Yay!

Hi Shelli,

No flames here! Only best wishes for your successful journey.

I know of a number of RNY and LapBand folks that have successfully employed WW in their own loss and maintenance and I believe it will work for you as well.I

think that we all need to look at what we each need to help us make the most of this opportunity we have. If the structure of weekly weigh ins are what will work for you, then you need to go do that and leverage the combination of sensible eating, portion control that you band will help you with and exercise that you'll get from WW. That, along with weekly accountability may just be the ticket.

I know that many say that they did this because they don't want to be on a 'diet' for the rest of their lives, but I have to tell you that the period of time when you are losing weight is a 'diet' and a time to learn new behaviors that hopefully will sustain us once we reach our goal weight. The way that we eat early in our journey isn't realistically reflective of how we will eat in the long term. So I think that find a program that will help you learn how to eat well and to identify and manage behavior issues is a wonderful idea.

I know that for me, I needed to get a handle on my behavior and I'm still working on that. I think counseling or some sort of behavior modification program is necessary for me to be successful in the long term. That's why I'm such a big proponent of the "Beck Diet Solution." It provides a structured format and process to identify, address and manage the behavior issues that threaten our long term success. It doesn't matter that we had surgery on our guts, if we can't get our heads around the behaviors that sabotage our weight loss and maintenance.

I look forward to hearing of you journey through the prospective of WW.

Wishing you all the best,

Barb

No flaming from me!

I appreciate the open honesty that all of you share on this website. It helps me to be better prepared and "know what is coming" (as much as possible anyway)

The way I see it is that you recognize there could be a problem and you are acting on it BEFORE you let that demon sneak back up on you!

Let us  know how it goes, and remember, you are not dieting- you are maintaining the weight you have lost ;)

Im happy to see you found something you feel will work for you :-) Personally I never considered WW as a 'diet' per se... its more guidelines of how one should be eating etc... kind of like a nutritionist but for a group. Pre-op I did WW and enjoyed it (I was taking diet pills so that cured the 'hunger' part allowing me to stick to it!).
A lot of post-WLSers do WW and have great success with it.

First visit to surgeon - 288 ~ bmi 45.1
2 week pre-op 252 ~ bmi 39.5
Total lost - 153 Since surgery - 117!
Goal weight - 155 (mine) 180 (surgeons)
Current weight - 135 (2020 I lost 10lbs due to dedicating myself to working out more and being in better shape)

1/14/2025 still maintaining 135 :-)

Extended TT, lipo, fat injections - 11/2011

BA/BL/Arm Lift - 7/2014

Scar revision on arms - 3/2015

HALO laser on arms/neck 9/2016

Thigh Lift 10/2020

Thigh Lift revision 10/2021

Shelli congrats on taking the step to get what you want. I would hope no one would flame you for taking control of your health. You have to decide what is best for you. I had RNY and I think if there was a WW here I would try to go to it just to learn to eat better and be accountable to someone else. I hope you get the results you are looking for and I will be cheering you on!

I see WW as a way to work on the head part since our surgeries don't fix that for us so easily. My plan of attack is Overeaters Anonymous when I get to the point that restriction is less of an issue for me. Right now I am okay so far as I can not eat so much and I don't feel the hunger so much but I do know that it will come back and I will need the help too. Okay so WW and OE won't really fix our heads but they do help us to train our heads to handle eating in a more healthy way. I am sorry you felt you might get flamed for your plan of action. I don't see why anyone would discourage you from this idea.

Sounds like a GREAT idea to me, Shelli!

What is a "diet" anyway?  Really and truly, it is a way of eating...what your food intake consists of.  EVERYONE post-op is on some type of diet!  And all post-oper's have to make concientious choices or else they will most likely just fall right back to where they were pre-op eventually.

I love it that you are learning to use your tool in the way that gives you the best results and if that includes WW's, then so be it!  I certainly hope it is the 1, 2 punch that you are looking for.

Please keep us posted about this and think about using Iris's daily accountability post too.

GOOD LUCK!!!

I think the accountability is great.  I have thought about doing the same thing.
Good luck!!

Shelli i went back and read a couple of your blog posts prior to this one and maybe this may make a little head way to go with the WW. If I am mistaken dont lap band patients typically take around three years to achieve their goal? If so you are only a short distance on the path and others have told me that stalling is just a part of the journey. You also mentioned a lack of exercise. I know for me it helps even if I only get in one really good day of it on the weekend the after affects continue several days later on. I just try to get in as much as possible during the time set aside for exercise and then when things go better on the scales I am very ok with that. I was stuck on never getting to the 240's which for some reason I just could not kick it out to get down there. My friend and I took what turned out to be an eight plus mile hike with backpacks and an added side trip with out them. I saw the 240's I needed and felt pretty good the next day without so much soreness. Im not advocating you get extreme but do try to find time out for yourself in the week even if its one day and then do all you can to work yourself into the workout. WW is a great tool as well in my opinion as well as making good choices for what you do decide to eat. Best wishes as you get in the ring and deliver the one two punch.
