there are hikes that some days are not meant to be.
I went out Sunday with my bud Larry to go only three miles up to this back country campsite in the Smokey Mountain Nat Park. Its not a bad hike and we got there in about a hour and twenty minutes. *(world record for my big ol butt). We get up there and bang they have a sign posted the campsite is closed. The next one is about three more miles up the trail and I do mean up up up.. We cussed a bit then stomped around looking at all the remains of bears tearing up the fire ring and a log nearby. Evenetually we put on those heavy packs and began a trip back to the parking lot. Ok now for the good part we did it in an hour (ok I am pretty please with the performance). After unloading we drove up to the Ridge of Conley's Creek which is in Nantahala Nat Forrest and Larry says "Hey Push, lets go down to Alarka Falls I think its only a half a mile down the trail." Ok im up for a little hike so we take off. About a mile down we ran into two guys that were on their way back. We found out we were only half way there.. lol.. jeez another mile. So we got to the little place that the trail took off the main one to the falls and lawd it was built for billy goats. I had to grab onto trees and limbs and also dive under a few fallen trees and over a couple for about two tenths of a mile straight down hill not even thinking about the climb back up that steep monster. The Falls were worth every cent of the trip though. I did not have my camera with me but Ill make another trip down there when I have not carried a pack six miles then hked two more in and two more out with out one. Need less to say I was beat like a baseball on a double header. We set up camp by the vehicles which was almost comical because we have never ever slept anywhere close to a car. The next day it was breeze to throw all my stuff in the car and haul it back to the house. I got on the scales and they dropped of five more pounds putting me into the 240s which got me stoked. Today I took my neice and her husband fishing over in Pisgah Nat forrest. The stream was so full of fi**** was unbelievable. Though I did not catch a huge amount is was really nice just to wade in cool water for a while and more or less relax a bit. tommorrow we will go to the upper Nantahala river for fishing on boulders up to the size of traval trailers. Getting skinny has never been so much fun at times. If I could just get rid of some of the aches and pains that come with the territory it would be really nice.
