Don't get all my protein supplements in...help!

Okay its been over a month since surgery and I'm still only getting about 25 grams or so of protein drinks in a day and no matter how much I sip I don't seem to be getting very much in during a day. I don't want to end up sick because I can't seem to drink or eat much. How do you get the protein in?

Cindy,

Please call your Dr's office, but I'm pretty sure that they will tell you that you are a bit behind the curve right now because of your stricture. You'll catch up soon, but generally it's hard to get much in due to swelling early on. Try to consume 2 ounces at the top of each hour. It used to take me about 10 to 15 minutes to get it down at first. Then work on other fluids until you get to the top of the next hour and do this every single hour that you are awake, even if you don't 'feel' like it. Generally, the surgeon's know that you may not get all of your protein in at first, but they want you to work hard to get as much in as possible and work towards the protien goal that they set for you.

Sooooo, get out your alarm and set it for the top of the hour and get sipping.

I'm sorry your having such a hard time and I hope you feel better real soon.  I wanted to let you know about the protein I'm going to use for my liquid diet right after surgery.  It's Zero Carb Isopure.  50g protein in 12 oz of water.  I'll have to sip it 6x a day 2oz each time, that will give me the 50g protein. It comes in diff flavors, maybe that is something you could try.

Thanks Kimberly, yes I have tried those but only thing that I seem to half way get down are the bullets.

Hi Cindy,
Dont expect it to happen over night it takes time.
Actually Myrtis turned me onto this whey protien nectar.
I usally mix it with my crystal light that I sip on all day.
The site for it is http://www.si03.com/shop/shopexd.asp?id=23 you get 23 grams of protien a scoop.
So I drink 64 ounces of fluid a day and put in one scoop per 32 ounces.
Also I enjoy the nectar after working out to give my body a good boost of protien.
Keep at it and it will get easier.

Hi Annie, acutally I have a big can of the fuzzy navel Nectar and a few samples of others, haven't thought about mixing it with crystal light but will give it a try.

If you're drinking broths or anything like that, if you haven't tried the Natural or unflavored powder, try it.  It gives you more options of what to mix your protein powder in.  Also be careful about the "bullets".  Make sure they have the right kind protein.  I was advised Whey or Soy were the best and the bullets sometimes are most a collegen protein which isn't really absorbed.  Just be sure you're getting the best thing for you.  Hang in there girl!

Thanks Tammy for the advice. I have tried the unflavored protein powder and I thought it made my food taste werid for something that didn't have a flavor to it.
