Four days after RNY...Cramps HELP!

My surgery was on Monday.  Every time I drink my protien I get bad gas , bloating and cramps, these really hurt!  I have tried three different types of protein shakes so far and all of them are hurting me.  I try to "walk it off" like they told me to do in the hospital but it is not helping.   Has this happened to anyone else?  Is it just something I have to deal with for a few days?  Thanks for any suggestions!

I'm so sorry you are not feeling well. Why don't you call the Duke office and speak to someone? Wow when I called this morning it was like a whole new experience.  John Ferguson is no longer there and new people seem to be more accomodating. They also have an insurance expert now and another Nut and surgeon.

Are you using whey based protein and mixing with milk? Could be you are having a problem with lactose... first try mixing with lactaid, soy milk or water... if you are still bothered try a soy based protein instead of whey.
Also try messing with the temp... room temp or warm liquids may work better than cold.
And keep on walking.

Check and see if you might be alergic to the 'type' of protien. There are different protien types and most people do just fine on any type, but some have allergic reactions. You might be allergic to type of protien in the supplements that you are taking and switching, just might fix the problem. The most common protien bases are Soy and Whey.

Also, please call Duke and let them know what's happening, what you've tried in terms of protien types and the reactions you've had and how long it takes for them to occur and how long they last. I would imagine that one of the RNs or Dietician's should be able to help.

Call sooner than later, because they will probably shut down for the weekend pretty soon.

Wishing you all the best,

Barb
