I went to my GP yesterday because I have been sick for 3 weeks well I have a double ear infection and strep throat now I am on a Z pack.  Here is the confusion part he told me that I didn't need my Advandia anymore he said my A1C is normal but that I m still hyperglycemia so I was suppose to stop the meds and do my sugar checks and lets see how it goes .  So...... am I no longer diabetic??????
Is this a wow moment or what I don't know if I an just foggy from being sick or what but I am so confused.

Its been long enough since your surgery to get a good reading on your A1c levels so if they are normal then you can probably expect them to stay normal for a very long time. It remains to be seen how you will do without the meds but most likely it will continue to get better. I am off my diabetes mads too. I should get mine tested in another month or two. I expect to have a very normal A1c based on my still frequent glucose readings. I test several times a day because it is hard to believe its real. I never will think I don't have diabetes but I do believe it is in good control now and without meds.

Since diabetes is a disease just like alcoholism I refer to myself as a recovering diabetic.  I'm still a diabetic but I now have controll of it instead of it controling me and my life.

Leslie,

It sounds like you are keeping good control on your diabetes and now they want to see what will happen without meds.  So keep a good check on your sugars and if you see a trend that shows elevated sugars, then call your doc.

HgbA1C is a test that checks an average for 3 months.  It is a possibility that with being sick that you haven't eaten as well and now the sugar levels are down.

I consider myself a controlled diabetic and I know that with weight loss and exercise, I will have good glucose readings, but I could slip up and eat a lot of carbs and my glucose could be high.

If you still have any concerns, call and talk to your doc or his nurse...

I have been off my meds since surgery and my last A1C was 5.  I consder my diabetes to be in remission rather than cured or gone.  I feel if I regain my weight or eat horrible things like I used to then the diabetes will manifest itself again.  I rarely check my blood unless I feel strange or bad.  I do not miss sticking my fingers!!!!  Nor do I miss the copays for the medicine.

Leslie,  I'm not familiar with the medication or terms you used, but I'm thinking...  Since you haven't had your surgery yet, do you think your pre-op diet has helped stablize your blood sugar?  That would be so totally awesome...yes, wow!  You'll have to let me know how your diet and weight-loss is going.  So sorry to hear about your double ear infection and strep.  I started the Z-pack yesterday.  Hope you are better soon!

The only thing that I have done so far is low carb high protien diet for three months and stopped soft drinks.  I stay around 15 to 20 carbs a day and 2 protien drinks ( 1 meal and a snack maybe 2 depending how hungry I am).  I have lost around 25 pounds(due to weigh on the 10th of November.)  But I eat no bread no sugar and watch the white things.  I have to watch the salt too because of lymphedema.  Wow I never expected it to lower that quick I hope I get to stay off the meds.  This is so cool it feels good to lose a med.I still have 3 months of pre-op diet to go.
