Crazy questions???

Hi all,

Question 1:  I am days away from my consult with the nutritionist and about a month away from consult with psych.  Here's my crazy question...I'm a little concerned about the throwing up part of this process because I know it probably will happen at some point.  Anyone feel "wierd" or different when throwing up after having RNY?

Question 2:  Anyone have problems with getting sick after surgery from anesthesia?  I also have a consult with the anesthesiologist and am wondering what he will do since I always seem to get sick after surgery.

I guess that's it for now...I'm sure I'll have more questions later.

Thanks,
Ginny

Don't fear.....I had a patch to wear before surgery and at hospital to control nausea. I did not throw up  from anestheia at all and I usually do. Ask at your pre-op about them.

As for the throwing up after surgery.......for me it is not bad at all...nothing like being sick with a virus. There is so much relief from the stuck food it is no problem. It is always my fault when it happens. It only happens if I do not chew my food up enough or I eat to fast. Some habits are hard to break. Some people call this the foamies. I hope this shed some light on your concerns.

Good Luck

Unfortunately, I had to delete this post due to privacy concerns.

Got a lap band in 2008. Tried hard, but didn't lose much weight & developed swallowing problems. Fought my insurance company for almost a year & finally had a band to DS revision on 5/11/12. Have now lost 125 pounds. Yay!

Tell the Anestheiologist (sp?) that you get sick after being put under and would they please make sure you get the "Z" medicine. I can't remember the name of the medicine but I was told years ago just to remember to mention the "Z" med and any anestheiologist  would know what I was talking about. I've had 2 surgeries since stumbling across this little miracle injection and it's worked like a charm.

I'm not sure what your question about any differences in throwing up is really asking. What I will say may fall into the realm of TMI but here goes: When I  throw up it's not like projectile vomiting or anything as severe as that. It's more along the lines of a dry heave. If I eat to fast or don't chew my food up well enough I occassionally suffer from the foamies. Foamies are pretty weird. It's sorta like the piece(s) of food that you just ate come right back up surrounded by a covering of snotty like stuff.  As soon as that comes up - a little toothbrushing/mouthwash and you're good to go. I don't seem to suffer any adverse effects after the incident.

I hope this sorta answered your questions. If you need me to further explain myself - send me a PM and I'll be more than happy to try and answer.

I'm with Iris. I have not thrown up since my surgery, but I have had the foamies. Doesn't feel great, but it usually only lasts about 10 min or less. Makes you remember to eat slowly and chew well!
Can't help you with the second question.

Thanks for your help.  I finally told my principal today that I was hoping to have this done during Christmas break but if not it would be in January or February and I would be out a couple of weeks.  He said he was also thinking about it so it would help him to see how I did.  Never know what people are thinking.  I haven't told many people b/c I've been afraid of reactions but his made me feel a lot better!
Thanks again for the info.

I am a year and 7 months out from surgery and i have thrown up because of the RNY 4 times.  Each of those times it was because I had either eaten too fast and gotten something stuck or I had eaten too much and part came back up.  It is all about being mindful of what you eat and how you eat it.  You will be fine.

In regards to anesthesia, they will give you anti-nausea meds preop and have more if you need it after surgery.  I didn't need any, but you might.  It will depend on how your body reacts to the anesthesia.  The anesthesiologist is primarily interested in the size of your neck and air hole.  He will measure your neck and look at the size of your throat.  He wants to know ahead of time how he is going to intubate you in the OR.  That will be the main focus of your visit.  I am sure he will address your questions concerning nausea as well.

Take care.
Ellen
