How's your thermostadt?

I don't know if this is related to the weight loss in general, the fact that it was so rapid, the fact I had RNY, or what, but I've noticed that I really swing from overheating to freezing a lot. Does this happen to you? If so, does it get better with time?

I've been hot natured all my life, but YES, I've had freezing spells since I lost some padding.  At first one night, my sis said "We need to take you to the emergency room, because you are NEVER cold. Something is wrong with you." I was in a sweat suit, wrapped up in 2 blankets in front of the fireplace shivering!  LOL

Like you, I think I've always been "warm natured" ... but lately, this swinging from hot to cold business is driving me nuts ... I don't know if you noticed yesterday, but I kept putting on my coat, then taking it off ... Oh well, if that's one of the tradeoffs for feeling so much better, I guess it's worth it.

I have definitely gone from being the hottest one in the bunch to now needing to put on a sweater. I tell people that I've lost some of my "natural insulation."

I think losing the natural insulation is definitely a factor ... I just can't figure out the hot flash quotient ... I'm already post menapausal, so I dunno.

It's nice though.  I can wear sweaters I have that are virutally new because I hardly ever wore them before for YEARS.  I've always slept in summer gowns year round, but have found myself this winter digging out old PJs with sleeves.

Honestly, I never used to wear PJ's except when I was up and around the house. Now, I'm always in flannels. Of course, my old ones just won't work anymore ... So, I've been hitting the Goodwill longerie big ... at $1.39, I can afford to have a couple of sets.

I don't do much swinging, I just stay cold.  I figure I lost most of my padding.  Right now, I'm wearing a fleece pajama set, thick socks, and wishing I had a blanket.  This is almost the "polar opposite" of my temperature prior to surgery. Take care. Ellen

I wonder if this is a permanent thing or if we'll adjust some in the future?

My unofficial theory:  We are losing a lot of our insulation, that's pretty much a given.  Most of us are used to being hot, we are very unfamiliar with feeling cold.  I think that magnifies the effect for us.  However, I have often wondered if, in addition to the above, if there's something to do with our circulation.  B-12 is a vitamin that is used by our bodies for circulatory function.  I wonder if some of our feeling cold issues is from lack of circulation?  I think that it's so very important for us to supplement B-12 for a variety of reasons, that being one.  RNYers don't absorb B-12 well, if at all, because it's absorbed in the part of the intestine that's removed.  Just some thoughts... I do think that the loss of insulation is the primary reason for the coldness.  Do I think that'll change?  Probably not, at least not until we start having "power surges".  I have just had to learn to take a sweater with me.  My mother, who has been cold her entire life, tells me, "Welcome to the rest of the world."  Take care.
