Acid Reflux Medication after Surgery

The Duke WLS Center requires all RNY patients to take a daily dose of Acid Reflux medication.  In my case I am taking Prilosec.  I took it for the first time yesterday and had what I can only describe as a "bad day".  I am one week post op.   I took the Prilosec first thing in the morning, maybe I should take it at the end of the day?  Any advice or experience you can provide on this topic would be most appreciated. One last thing - WHEN WILL THE BAD BREATH GO AWAY!!!!  Good Lord! Take Care, Marie

Hi Marie, Congrats on one week down!  I took Prilosec too.  I'm no help for you on that one though, because I didn't really have any problems with it.  I did take mine in the morning.  Mine was in a capsule, and I would break the capsule open and swallow all of the teeny-tiny pills inside.  The capsule shell itself terrified me! As for the bad breath.  Yikes!  Mine was atrocious, and nothing I did helped.  We called it dragon breath in my house.  But, in time it improved.  Now it's not really a problem anymore.  Maybe that's because my husband's gone, so noone's complaining!?!  No, really...it's improved dramatically!  :)  There's hope!

Thanks Deb- What you said about the capsule makes sense, and I bet that was the cause of my problem yesterday.  From now on I will break the capsule before swallowing. Take Care, marie

That is weird that it is required... I asked my surgeon on Monday about it b/c I thought I was having some bouts of heartburn and he said it wasn't it-- very unlikley to get heartburn after surgery... Anyway, I don't have anything to suggest, but I hope it gets better soon!!! Congratulations on your surgery and know it does get better!!! Take care.

Marie, I take my Prilosec at night.  Never any problems.  My surgeon advised it was to coat your new "tummie" and help it heal.  But he also advised I will take long term to insure no damage to the pouch. You are doing well - Dianne

I took mine for 6 months post op.  Faithfully.  It was no harm. I have had ulcers for over 6 months and the prilosec (nexium in my case) is much cheaper and less painful then taking a pill.  Maybe you should try it later in the day. The nexium has to be taken without vitamins and food.  It's still kinda hard.
