Topic: RE: Dr. Stephen Scott...good recommendations?
I had to do the liquid for 4 weeks (fatty liver) lost little under 10% of body weight that month ( which turned into 6 weeks for other reasons) MY BMI was near 50 and I was 53 y.o when I had surgery , and he would not do RNY on me only the VSG. Said I could get the RNY later when I lost over 100lbs. Said I was too high risk for the RNY. I have been happpy with the VSG. No problems what so ever. Just wish they had support group meeting later in the evening. I do not get off work till 630-7 pm and when I have gone I had to take vacation days. My God knows I need a support group. Go to all you can before surgery (I was never told I could go to them pre op) and after surgery forever... Maja
Topic: RE: Has anyone tried Depaul or St Alexis
I had surgery at SSM DePaul. Dr Scott is a great surgeon, I did not like the handling of "office matters" My suggestion is to find one person to always talk to about office stuff. You Do get bounced around. The in patient was good, not great in step down, a bit disorganized. But once you get to the 9th floor where all of us go they know there stuff. Dr Scott and Dr Morales rule - what they want and what their patients need goes as law, as they must bring in big bucks to the hospital. the program has hired more and more staff and moved to larger offices. I had VSG 11/02/10 I cannot believe it was a year ago. I had some complications in surgery and Dr scott handled it superbly!! No recovery problems at all or any complication ever. Just a bit of reflux if it eat "wrong". By the way Dr Scot is also doing WLS surgery at SSM St Clare hospital in Fenton, MO ( south west County) Be VERY grateful you have an advocate in your PCP. My BIG complaint is the follow up program. the three times I have attended I had to take vaction days from work as they only meet at DePaul at 530 pm . I get off work between 6-7 and the meeting is over at 7pm. And the walk from the parking lot to the May center auditorium is long and steep with no rest areas for the morbid obese esp for me It is a near as impossible for me to get into the building. And God Know with my prayers being sent heavenly I NEED A SUPPORT GROUP. Any specific questions. I have not one regret in having my surgery. Maja

Topic: I finally went through with it!!
Hello everyone. I've been a member now for going on 2 years, and have been dragging my feet about the actual WLS. Well I finally did it. I called Dr Follwell and made my appointment. I already have all my blood work and cardiac tests done. So on the 30th I go see him and get set up for everything. The lovely ladies at his office are expediting everything, and have told me to expect my surgery date to be right befor or shortly after the NewYear. I thought I would be more scared now, but instead it's like a weight is already been lifted off my chest,(forgive the pun...lol) Im so excited i've even began buying my protein shooters. I know it's a long and interesting road ahead, but i'm so ready to begin this part of my life. Any and all advice is not only welcome but greatly needed. Btw whats the best way to prepare for the actual surgery? Happy Holidays to all of you!! I know what i'm asking Santa for Christmas..lol
Topic: Has anyone tried Depaul or St Alexis
Hi guys
I am in the St Louis region. And I am trying to get lined up and get started again toward WLS.
Two years ago I did attend a seminar for Depaul and was impressed with the suregeons seemed at that time was ahead of the rest. I ended up being denied and without any additional help from my primary. With my weight and other health concerns I changed primary doctors in the last week and my new doctor is pushing real hard for the gastric. She asked me on my first visit if I had a preference as she would refer me into there program. My original thought was WOW... After a 5 month process last time to get denied and she is wanting to know who I would like to go to right away..
So here is my question. I have heard Depaul has a good program but the support and the hospital it self after the fact has some problems that occor quite often.
I had several of my co-workers use the New-Start program at St Alexis Hospital in which they recomended this to me. I could not tell you the first thing about this hospital or located.
These are the 2 programs that I know of... Someone said that St Johns or MOBAP may have programs. My family really had some problems with a surgery (non WLS) that went bad at Barnes over the summer so I would like to not think about that right now.
Where and what kind of expeirences did you have
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
Bob

Topic: Thrive Freeze Dried food
Has anyone here ever heard of Thrive freeze dried food. I went to a gun show (my daughter took me) and the one booth that held my interest was this vendor who had this very nutritious freeze dried food that you are to store and use in the event of an emergency, or use now if you wish. I have to say, the samples were delicious, especially the corn. I was stunned. No, I don't sell it or have any affiliation with it, but I wondered if it wouldn't be a good thing to have for food post lap band. The food upon contact with water (or your mouth) releases the flavor and it is very easy to get a consistency that is lap band friendly because it disolves nearly. They had all kinds of veg and fruits and even meat. Some were a bit skittish by the meat, but the chicken was fabulous. I am thinking of ordering it and trying it when I am able to go off of full liquids. What do you think?

Topic: RE: New to the Board
I enjoyed hearing from you. It is great to hear from someone who knows Dr. Cardwell. I have heard you either love him or hate him and I have to say I really love the guy. He is straight forward and accepts no nonsense and I appreciate that. I am very excited and scared too a bit. I worry that I will be one of those that no matter what I do nothing will work. I have had a lifetime of dissapointment in the weight loss arena since having children 20 years ago. I could work out like a demon in the gym and starve and still be bigger than my friends who could clean 2-3 plates at a food buffet and continue to wear a size 4. I hate them. (not really). Well, we will see what happens. I enjoy hearing what you all have to say here on the boards. Keep in touch.
Take care,
Jen

I will definitely keep posting, especially after the surgery. I would love to attend your support group, but I work evenings at this time. Sometimes we get Fridays off and if we do I will come to the Library Center and join your Circle of Friends. Thank you for the invitation.
Take care,
