This is a female, four year old Yorkie who weighs 7 pounds.  I think the different type kennels are going to have to be something I explore.  I have always used the hard plastic ones since they worked at home and on the airplanes, but I may need to expand our kennel collection.  She had never had a toy before and didn't know how to play so I got her a Kong and put her favorite treat in it and she does work with it, but her other toys she is clueless as to what to do with them.  I couldn't get the link to work.  But I'm sure Clay is really cute!

Morning!

Let's see if I can add anything - You've gotten some wonderful advice so far!

When you leave her, don't look back. Same goes with coming home.  Don't make it a big deal or they will and it just excelerates the anxiety.

She may not like the crate but it may be necessary.  Mill dog will go in a crate... it's what they know.  We've had some success with the prissy pants/belly bands that they can wear while in the house.

Right now we have 8 foster dogs - 3 of which can I swear climb walls  :)  Lady will happily climb/jump over a 5'gate.... she taught Ashley... and Fiji, even with a broken leg, can get over the shorter ones.  They are driving me insane  lol  at least we have them all healthy so when they intermingle with my dogs we aren't contaminating anyone!
Good luck with your little girl - I would suggest researching mill dogs and rehabilitation practices if she was kept crated like that.  Much may be applicable.

I will try to find a mill dog site and see what they say.  I haven't tried the diapers as she was using the pee pad.  But the last couple times she didn't she went on the floor right behind the door.  I don't make a big deal when I leave, I put all her stuff in the bathroom then put her in last and say a quick bye and shut the door before she can get out.  She stiffens up and puts all four feet out when I try to put her in the kennel so I have a hard time getting her through the door, and her whole demeanor just crumbles.  I always found it was easier to housebreak a dog if there was one there already housebroken.  They learn alot by hanging out together, some of it not so good, like climbing and jumping, etc.

It's hard keeping everyone seperate till you know they are all healhy and bug free.

I bought Frontline Plus for dogs and puppies 8 weeks and older under 22 pounds at Fleet Farm.  I know the Vet used Frontline on her as I got some there the other day.  I just did the math and found it was cheaper to buy it at the store.

I too have a "spider dog" albeit she is a Great Dane and can scale a 6 foot fence with ease!!  I kenneled her for the first few years and gradually got her to not need to be kenneled.  We are able to leave her all day to roam the house alone and she does great.  I understand that your situation is much different, but what you might want to try is to kennel her and leave the house for a few minutes.  Try this several times a day and gradually lengthen the time you leave her kenneled.  This will let her know that you are coming back and she is NOT going to be left in there or forgotten about forever!  I am no dog trainer, but this is how we got our dogs used to the kennel and it seemed to work.  Its worth a try!  GOOD LUCK!! with the little tiny spider dog!

We worked with a guy in Phx who had two Great Danes.  The male actually knocked a cinder block loose from the 6 ft back fence trying to get to the dog next door who was in heat.

I bought a book on Yorkies to try and figure out what is typical to the breed and what is her personality and what is left over from her last 4 years.  One story in the book had my husband and I laughing out loud.  A lady had just moved and her Yorkie took off out an open door and latched onto the neck of a Great Dane being walked by it's owner in front of her home.  It remained there till it was pulled off.  The Great Dane just kept trying to look down to see what it was.   Thank God he was a gentle giant or that Yorkie would have been a Dane Snack!  The book says over and over how the Yorkie is a very small dog who thinks it's a very big dog.  It says many a Yorkie has met death by attacking a bigger dog.    So I guess we get used to the crate, boy is she gonna hate me.

That is FUNNY!
We have a cat that thinks he is the boss of the dog and my great dane is Large for a female, she is probably the size of a typical male great dane and she just lets the cat scratch and hiss and jump on her as much as he wants to.  Sometimes she gets sick of it and lets him know that she is the boss but she is pretty gentle with him compared to what he is doing.  He loves to bite her ears and she HATES  that because they are very sensitive.  Good Luck with the Yorkie!  What is your dog's name?  I love yorkies, I already have a name picked out in case I ever am able to get one... "The Dutchess of Yorkie" of course we would just call her dutchess or dutchie pie or something cute like that.

They are from Yorkshire England, so Dutchess of Yorkie would work, you could call her Fergie too.

Her name is Audrey-Belle.  Her name was Belle when we got her and I didn't really want that to be her name but I didn't want to totally confuse her either.  Our daughter loves Audrey Hepburn who also had a Yorkie so we hyphenated it to Audrey-Belle.  She still gets called Belle or Bella for short by hubby.
