Anyone else have spouse/SO not overweight, but...
is a Junk food Junkie? I have called us Jack Sprat and wife for years. It is SO us! The nursery rhyme would have been perfect for our wedding invites...but I wouldn't have The Wedding March played because I've heard the "Here comes the bride, all fat and wide. Here comes the groom, skinny as a broom" version way too many times!
Anyhoo, I kind of posted this same thing in the spouses forum, but wanted to know if other WLS people have or had the same issue. DH considers all health food 'yucky'. (No, he isn't 7yrs old....at least not all the time.
) He will eat some veggies as long as they are cooked - better if they are stuffed or fried though. Potato chips go in the veggie category in his world.
DH's "diet foods" are Peppermint Patties and pretzels. He has high cholesterol and I think he may have sleep apnea too. He goes thru fast food withdrawals and has to have chocolate every day. Two of his favorite things to buy when he goes grocery shopping are frozen pizza and hot dogs. Lately he's added pot pies to that (the cheapies to boot!) I have refused to eat any of those things for years. (O****asionally a slice or two of frozen pizza, but only if there wasn't anything else. I won't buckle on the hot dogs or pot pies though.) Since he isn't overweight, he doesn't think it is an issue. I feel we are both walking time bombs. I have, in little segments as to not freak him out, brought up how after my surgery our grocery list is going to need to change, that I will not be making 2 different meals when I cook, suggested trying new food, etc., but it isn't sinking in. My surgery will be here before I know it....(no date yet, but probably in about a month).
Has anyone had any luck with helping their SO be more open to a healthier lifestyle? If so, can you offer any info?

Having surgery may show him the difference.
My husband has slowly started losing weight since my surgery. He hit me with tonight that he is thinking about getting a lap band. I kid you not. I almost fell out of my chair. My hubby is overweight, high cholesteral, high blood pressure, sleep apena, depression, acid reflux and has deterorating discs in his back. He also refused to give up junkfood when I first had my surgery. Now, he doesn't go shopping with me much any more. I do allow him one bag of chips a week for his lunch, but he has given up his traditional bologna sandwiches for ham or turkey wraps. He has also given up his late night snacking of sausages and cheese.
Maybe this will be a good change for both of you.
We write our own destiny. We become what we do.
Thanks!
I hope this is a change for both of us. I probably should have taken him along to the surgeon's appointment, but I know he considers this my thing. I did tell him that by having this surgery, I may just find myself buying some new sexy bra & panties and something other than flannel nighties. That got his attention a bit more...but I think he has AADD.

Gwen,
I have a husband, who is not Jack Sprat, who could definelty stand to lose some weight, and my having surgery, changing my eating styles influenced my children but has still not influenced him.Sometimes I will say, it is hard, He tries to "sucker" me back to "the bad side" of doing things, but that is when you have to remember why you did things. Your tastes really do change after surgery. I can't stand food with sauces or heavy gravy, noodles or an of that home type cooking which he loves so I don't make it. This is not to say I have not been without my temptations and my downfalls. I stay away from sweets. I avoid high fats, no carbonated beverages since surgery. but-- I have had some carbs- breads still call my name occasionally.
It can be hard if your whole family is not doing as you do- I don't put junk food in the house, but-- My oldest can drive now- so it finds its way to my house...
My suggestion is.. Do your best to train and suggest. Be a guide. Look for support and Stick to what you know is right.. It is best for all of you.. We all got to where we are do to what we put in our mouths. I wish you well and if you ever have any questions, please feel free to ask..

Gwen, You and I have to have a serious talk, because I am certain we are married to the SAME MAN!!! LOL! Except my husband is in peak health, is perfect weight and lives on Little Debbies, ice cream and coffee. Seriously. Cholesterol perfect, triglycerides perfect, coronary artieries clear as a whistle, and he's 55 years old. We both went on a diet together once.....never again. At the end of two weeks I was so excited about losing 5 lbs and was sure he didn't lose a thing as he cheated like crazy.....and he lost 12 lbs. It took everything I had not to smother him in his sleep!!! LOL!! And he has made it clear that he will NEVER change his eating habits, but he will keep Little Debbie locked up in the basement (or the dog house, I let him choose)

My hubby eats like a horse, lives on big macs, fries, frozen pizza, and fried chicken strips! I used to think the man couldn't gain a pound, but he does just very slowly. He gained about 50 lb in the past 9 years, but I don't think that's much considering the man has this as a common meal : 2 big macs, super size fries double cheeseburger and supersize coke!
He is one of my concerns for post op (if I ever make it there). He supports me and everything, but I know that he won't change his eating habits, so the junk will always be around.
