Barix Clinics - Any experience out there?
My sister and I are going through Barix in Ypsilanti. she had her lapband surgery on December 18, and she is doing great. They give you all the tools you need to make it work. Dr. Schram is wonderful and they know what they are doing. My pcp is the head medical director out of Hurley bariatric center and he of course wanted me at hurley, but with the research and the options for what band (I want the realize band) I wanted it is Barix for me. My sister is very happy with her decision and I did the research for the last year on all this and Barix is my choice too. Good luck in your journey.

Hi,
I had RNY elsewhere however I have had my plastics done at Barix. I have several friends and my bosses wife had her RNY done at Barix.
They are a comprehensive hospital which solely dedicates themselves to bariatrics and plastics. My understanding is that while you are there, they provide samples of protein drinks, give you a large notebook of lifetime plans, and a lifetime of follow up care.
I have met Dr. Popalowski, and know his work with some of my friends. The nursing staff caters to bariatric patients, and therefore identify with your post op life once the surgery is complete.
However, if you are shopping around for a place that suits you, a real great comprehensive program is at the University of Michigan Adult Bariatric Program where the quality of care is outstanding as well. I know several people who had their surgery there, as well as having met some patients and I know the surgeon's admin asst personally. If you'd like to contact them here is their website:

I recommend that you do plenty of research on facilities and surgeons, pre op and post op care and the surgery that will ultimately change your life forever.
Best wishes to you!

Hello,
There are a ton of Barix graduates and wls-ers to be on the Ontario forum. feel free to stop by anytime and post. I highly recommend Barix since they have a great record and generally very few complications - lower than the national average for bariatrics. I have found their doctors to be top notch especially my doc, Dr. Pop.
I had my laproscopic roux en y in July of 2006 at Barix Ypsilanti with Dr. Poplawski. My insurance allowed me to pick whatever facility I wanted and I chose Barix because of their professionalism, specialization, my surgeon's record and background, and because they do a day-after-surgery leak test which most other surgeons/facilities do not.
My stay at Barix was top notch. It was like clockwork and I had exceptional care. It was my first time with a surgery or even in the hospital so I was very nervous - but it was a wonderful experience.
If you would ever like to chat drop me a line!

I don't think I can add much to what has already been said here but I will say that I had open RNY 27 days ago and I could not have possibly be any happier with the care I received. The nursing staff was amazing and they really made me feel great as I began this new chapter in my life. Dr. Schram was amazing, not only to me, but to my wife and kids as well. He was very patient with me as I asked a million and one questions. I also looked at two other places and chose Barix and Dr. Schram because of his reputation.
Best of Luck on your journey.
