what if you stumble on smoke

Hypothetically, what if one were told to quit smoking 4 weeks before surgery... and one slipped with two weeks left?

One would put one's life in jeopardy and possibly have one's surgery cancelled out from under one depending upon how big of a slip one made. Which in turn would keep the OR occupied while it could have been used for someone else. The time slots the schudulers use to board patients is valuable. It's best that one inform one's sugeon that they have been a number two and slipped up. I hoped that helped one. kp

If your surgeon does a blood test to see if you smoked, you stand the chance of being cancelled the morning of surgery.  You might better fess up and see what they can do.  Whatever you do, don't smoke any more.

call your doc and ask for a prescription for chantix, it really works wonders. Linda

I meet with the surgeon Friday, I will let him know.... If I blew it I blew it.

You can get through it. Do what Linda said and call him for the stuff and get it done before Friday. kp

Look, since honesty and support seem to be the norm on OH I will tell what the situation is. I smoke tip cigars 2-3 a day, never on weekends or evenings. I stopped two weeks ago and fell back Mon and Tue.  surgery two weeks from today. I started the diet yesterday. Honestly I am feeling more depressed than exited about this decision, but if you read my profile, I must make thhis work, I want to watch my daughter grow. Thanks again for the (sometimes brutal) honesty and support. I am donw with the smokes. We will see what happens

Tim, it's hard to quit smoking, especially when you don't really want to.. but you *have* to. Try the chantix, it worked for me.  I had no problems quitting with it.  I didn't want to quit after 30 years but I knew I had to because I wanted the surgery.  So if you want the surgery, try the chantix.  You won't be sorry. but please do one thing.. be honest with your doctor AND yourself Good Luck!

Hey Tim, I hope all the honesty didn't scare you away.  I am an ex smoker, so I know how hard it is.  I also just wanted to tell you that you're not being judged, and we all slip up now and again.  It's great that you posted and are looking for encouragement from others. You know how I quit smoking?  I made my boyfriend (at the time, he's my hubby now) take away my money.  I couldn't buy them!  It drove me crazy, and I was one pissed off chick for about two weeks.  Then, it slowly got better. What is going to be hard for you is you're getting rid of two things you enjoy:  eating and smoking.  Both relax you, and pretty soon they won't be available to you.  So get ready for that. We try to help when we can, and will be here for you throughout this crazy time.  Best of luck to ya! Brenda
