Hi all, I am home from Monday's surgery and doing remarkably well except for the horrible life altering nausea that comes with whey protein drinks! I jumped to full liquids 36 hours early to make sure it was the protein drinks. It is only dairy related things that make me ill. My doc is on vacation and the surgeon on call is not a bariatric surgeon, I know far more about this than he does... looking for some soy protein suggestions that worked for you or other helpful thoughts. I am a very vain woman and want to keep my muscles and hair! Lol... Keke

I am lactose intolerant since surgery too. I use soy milk which helps alot. You have to figure out which one works best for you. Not all of them taste the same. I use Soy brand Soy Milk and I love it.... Also Matrix has some protein drinks that you can mix with water if you want too. I have alot of people that I know in my bariatric support group that use them and they love them. I hope that helps. Do some research on what ones you want to try. At the beginning of this process it is alot of trial and error.  Suzanne

What Suzanne said. You can also get Land O lakes lactose free milk. I think if you start with lactose free milks or soy milks the whey part of the shake won't bug you. kp

I also became lactose intolerant.  Thank goodness for lactose free milk.

I am allergic to milk and after surgery, any type of whey product would make me very sick.  I use gen-soy powder.  The one I use is flavorless, but they do make a vanilla and a chocolate....maybe other flavors.  I used to get it at Wal Mart, but lately haven't been able to find it there, so I recently ordered it off of Vitamin Shoppe online for a reasonable price.  I don't do protein drinks anymore, but do use it in my oatmeal.  I also use soy milk.  If you are used to drinking regular milk, it'll take a while to get used to the soy milk.  But I haven't had regular milk in so long that I don't even notice it.  My brother-in-law, who was raised on a dairy farm thinks that is just crazy...LOL!  My favorite soy milk is the Meijer brand.  I used to use Silk, but switched recently to Meijer.  It just had a better flavor to me.  I've never had any of the flavored soy milk, but I hear it's very good.  Good luck!  Tina PS - It was really hard for me at first, because all of the protein drinks I could find were whey based.  I had to depend on getting my protein in through my food early on.  Fortunately, beef was one of the easiest meats for me to eat, early on.

Thank you all for your thoughts, husband bought a couple of ready made bottles of isopure, made with whey, but lactose free, so far so good. Talked to my Nut today too. She wasn't crazy about the pureed chicken I replace my protein drink with, but was relieved I had no problems and that I was very cautious. One week out, I've lost 12 pounds, and I'm doing everything I'm supposed to do... even the endless amounts of water... God is good! Thanks again! Keke

Keke, Congratulations on putting surgery behind you. My husband had surgery after I did and found out he was lactose intolerant.  He now uses egg protein with soy milk.  Remember that whey protein is milk based. Good luck to you!
