Detroit OH event in May
looks like there will be another OH event in the detroit area this may ( http://www.obesityhelp.com/events/uzone,events/action,event_ details/?pkid=2001&key=8547dca5006a0f938fa29727237fca26 ). i'm sort of stoked about the idea because i went the last one and it was just about 4 weeks before i had surgery, and so at this one i'll be almost a year out... i don't know that the last one was super informative, but it was a) fun and b) empowering to be in a room full of people who've changed their lives so radically...
IMHO the last one was a HUGE waste of time and money. I would rather spend my $20 getting together with everyone someplace fun. It was hours of sitting through plastic surgeons and bariatric docs telling us stuff we've already been through (if you're post op). The whole event was geared toward pre-ops. A total disappointment for me....the only redeeming part was meeting a few faces from the board and seeing KP in his kilt.
Just my opinion.....I'm sure there were some that got something out of it, but I sure didn't.
Visiting vendor tables took all of ten minutes, and I moved verry slowly. Pens from Lovenox, fake Lapbands (eeeuuugh) from the Lapband people (might have been on top of a pen, now that I think about it), crunchy calcium tablets and a couple other such things.
Speakers included weight loss surgeon, plastic surgeon, therapist, Jeremy doing his canned, superspeed talk on the value of exercise. Bo McCoy (kindly excuse if misspelled) giving his testimony, MCing and keeping things moving. Amy Williams was there too. I don't remember who the Canadian Farm girl was who was sticking close behind her.
Some giveaways of sponsored products between speakers to individuals selected from the audience.. So-so lunch, served with beverage.
Breakout meetings for some to discuss moobs and such.
About 100 attended, mostly post-ops, which was a disappointment for the weight loss surgeon. I thought the therapist had some good stuff to say, but he didn't fare well when asked if he had ever been overweight. Took the talk right out of him, it did.
I liked giggling inappropriately (Judy was on pain meds for her back) and passing silly notes. Was nice to meet some folks IRL but once was enough.
Maybe TMI but you went and asked.
