Hair Loss Long After Surgery
My surgery was in September 2005 and I had the expected hair loss and I've been taking biotin (5000 mg) since then. In the last month, I have notice that I'm losing it again. I haven't had any other surgeries since that time, and the only other 'major' thing I had done was a root canal in October 2007. Other than the fact that my vitamin D was low, all of my bloodwork came back fine in December.
Any suggestions on what I might do to resolve this problem, other than possibly Rogaine for Women?? Or should I go with the men's extra strength?
Hi Rhonda,
Are you losing your hair evenly all over your head, or just on top? I looked at your profile to check your age. It could be the normal thinning of hair many women experience as they head into menopause. This is primarily genetic, and if it is the "male pattern baldness", then Rogaine for Women, or the generic form, minoxidil, might help.
I had a significant hair loss after RNY, and have not had all of it come back. My hairdresser has been suggesting minoxidil for about six months, but I have been hesitant to start using it. If it does work, then you have to use it forever. I found the cheapest source at Costco. I really don't like using it, so I'm not sure if I want it to work.
I'm finding this just another of the pleasant journeys of menopause.

I have been told by my ob/gyn that I am NOT going thru menopause. I have nothing really to base it on as neither my mom or maternal grandmother had gone thru menopause when they had hysterectomies (42 and mid 50's, respectively).
When I first started losing the hair shortly after surgery, I was told that my hair was still thick. It eventually stopped and just started up again recently.
I was told that I might add sicilia complex and fish oil to help with the loss.
I lost tons of hair after surgery, and no amount of biotin (shampoo or suppliments), zinc or protein would stop it. My PCP said it was just as Deb said "male pattern baldness" which is genetic from either mom or dad's side. Since my brother is in his early 30's and pretty bald, and my dad started that way too, the doc said the surgery probably "kick started" what was already going to happen to me. Meaning as I got older, I was eventually going to lose a some hair, but the stress from surgery and after just made it happen sooner and I probably won't be able to sprout enough hair to get it all back like before.
I'm not saying this is what happened to Rhonda.....just posting in general for those that may wonder after surgery. Everyone kept telling me I wasn't getting enough protein and suggesting suppliments but none of them worked. I spend too much money on purses and pedicures to set aside a minoxidil fund, so now I'm bald with fun purses and polished toes!!!
I was wondering if you were getting all your protein in. I recently saw a nutritionist and I thought I was eating enough but after we talked about what I was eating I realized I wasn't. Also, I added zinc to my daily vitamins. My hairdresser told me that this helps with thinning hair. *****ally knows but I figured it couldn't hurt. Take care, Fran
