While I would LOVE to lose all the weight real quick and be done with it I am also fine with a slower loss. I already have saggy skin (having 2 11+lb babies will totally stretch out your stomach) so I am not too worried about that (don't want more but i will live with it). Thank you for your input as well :)

If you have diabetes or are at risk for it the RNY may be the best route to go. I was borderline diabetic and couldn't risk getting that. I will tell both surgeries have their pros and cons. What it all boils down to is personal choice. I went in to Dr Ls office thinking the lap band would be it and nothing would change my mind. Well I did change my mind after doing research. For me RNY was the right choice. I have seen frustrations from both surgeries. OHHH I hate needles lol so fills would have been really hard for me.

Well, I am not really sure where to begin on this.  I read posts most all the time, but never reply much.  Sorry about that everyone.
My journey started last fall when I decided that I wanted to have the lapband to help me loose weight.  When I started going to the appointments at Dr. Loggins, I did not feel pressure one way or the other.  But after going to info sessions and support groups, I felt I wanted to have the RNY.  LIke Ruth, I felt that I needed something to scare me away from eating sweets.  Well, it just so happened that I needed to go in for Gall bladder surgery prior to my WLS.  Last January I went in for the gallbladder surgery, and Dr Loggins felt that I had way too much scar tissue from past surgeries, (that is another long story), that it would be too risky to do the RNY.  So then my mind was then changed back to the lapband.  I definately do get frustrated at times with the slow progression of my weight loss.  I also had a bad fill experience one time, and was very hesitant on going back for another, but have since worked that out, and I actually need to go back for another fill.  I am right now at 3 ccs.  I do have some restriction, but still feel hungry between meals.  So I guess, I did not really feel strongly for one surgery over the other, I just knew that I needed to do something for myself.  Dr. Loggins does seem ok with the weight loss I have had so far, although I wi**** would go quicker.  Just my opinion, do what ever you are the most comfortable with.  You are the one that is having the surgery, and need to live with your decision.  Good luck with your quest for more knowlege and in your decision making.

This is a very personal choice, there are so many different WLS and people who will tell you their type of surgery is the one to do. Read, learn, talk to WLS folks and find what fits best for you.

I choose RNY because of how much weight I had to loose and also due to the distance to my surgeon's. I couldn't be tied down to regular trips to the surgeon for fills had I chosen the Lap band. I also knew that my trigger foods are sweets and fatty foods. RNY won't allow me to indulge on these due to the dumping.

It took me 1 year from my 1st informational meeting to surgery. Most of that was due to us canceling appointments with the snowy winter weather and then trying to re-schedule two appointments- one for me and one for DH at the same day, timed near each other. I'm glad I had that year to eat healthier, loose some weight, get to know some people w/ WLS and really learn what it's all about. For me I wouldn't do it differently.

DH will have RNY Dec 1. He is diabetic, has gerds, and a host of other diagnoses which we look forward to being eliminated.

I'm glad you asked this - it's always interesting to me to see why people chose their type of surgery.

First - like others, I don't think one surgery is better than the other - just better fits for individuals.

For me, my insurance narrowed down my choices to RNY or lapband. I needed to loose more than half my weight - goal to still be determined.  I had issues with overeating sweets, refined carbs and fried foods - I needed to make them stop working for me and RNY with it's "dumping syndrome" seemed to be the best choice for me. Now I don't dump - but I've never really pushed it that hard and am still early out, but I am happy with my weight loss and the improvements to my health.

I don't think I could handle the needles with having a fill on the lapband.

As I went through the process I did make a list of pros and cons for each surgery for me - that did help in making my decision.

I have seen people be successful with both surgeries.

Best wishes on your journey

I am going in for RNY. Dr. Trieu told me with my BMI that the lap band just would not work for me. I have lots to lose so between the doctor and of course the all powerful insurance company. (that will not pay for lap band on patients with bmi over 50.) my decision is made. I worry sometimes about complications but my sugar is up and I do not want to be diabetic. Once I came to the conclusion that this is what I want to do, I am so happy and just cant wait. I go on the 17th.  I wish you all the best!
