Hi Heather!

As for your depression.  if you are honest about it, the one thing you have to realize is that after surgery it is more likely your depression will worsen.  I wasn't depressed before surgery but I ended up being suicidal after the surgery and quickly put on anti-depressants after that.  I think that is the only cause of concern for you.  I'm not sure if that will ruin your psych evaluation or not.  If you are honest about it then they may opt for therpy sessions or medication for you to take.  I am NOT sure if that will hinder your chances of getting approved for surgery.  I do know that one of the reasons why you get a psych evaluation is to determine that you know EXACTLY what you are doing when making this choice to change your life..

I'm sorry I didn't have much information for you.....I wish you much luck in your journey!

Having depression, especially in relation to your weight, is not a reason for most to exclude.  If you are on medications they may ask that you stay on them post-op for a while until you adjust to the changes.  Honesty is the best policy when it comes to your health.
They are looking for more serious underlying mental illness that  might inhibit your ability to stick to the program.  ( impulsive behavior, addictions, untreated bipolar...)  They are also looking to rule out unrealistic expectations and  your motivation for having surgery.
Hope this helps!

Depression will not hinder their decision. I have been on anti-depressants for 10 years and I was up front and honest. As a matter of fact my pysch dr is the one who filled out my paperwork and he stated I was a great candidate for WLS. You must always be honest and and upfront with your surgeon. You trust him so he must be able to trust you.

Hi Heather!

I can only answer for what my therapist, and my insurance company decided. I suffer from depression. My therapist did note it in her evaluation, but also noted that it was under treatment, and that she felt that with continued therapy it would stay treated. I had no problems with approval.

Congrats on getting this far. You should be proud of yourself. So many others before you have given up when their first attempt at approval failed. I almost did. But, I too got different insurance at another job, and it was paid for. So, you didn't give up, you're in the home stretch of one of the hardest parts (the supervised diet), and only good things await you.

Welcome back to the board!
Hugs!
