Diabetes
If you were diabetic preop, how are you doing now.
I'm 4 months postop and down 70 lbs. My last A1C was 5.1 with my last blood test. I'm still taking 10 units of lantis at night and 5MG of atcos in the AM. I'm hoping to get off all the diabetic meds but I'm getting discourged.
I hear other people on the board saying they went home
off all meds. I have been able to eliminate the regular insulin and stop the other oral med I was on but my goal was a "cure".

First off there is no cure only controlled. For me I have lost 142 pounds and at goal and I am almost 2 years out and I am still diabetic, I am off all of the insulin but I still take Metformin twice a day. For me I am happy with that it is a long way from the 5 to 6 shots I was giving myself daily. I have seen some on the boards say they are just controlling with diet early out and those are the very fortunate ones and I also think maybe how severly and for long you were diabetic plays in it, I have been diabetic for 26 years. Hope some of this helps don't get discouraged you are still early out.

Hello,
You are doing wonderful an A1C of 5.1 is FANTASTIC and your doctor will reevaluate your situation and make a decision soon. You are still early out and I am sure your doctor will make the right decision for you soon. When do you go back to see your surgeon, pcp or endochrinologist? make sure to discuss your concerns and see what the doctor says.
Beofre surgery I am sure your A1C was not looking this great. There is so much good coming out of this surgery stay positive and know that as long as you do what your docotr says you will be healthy and happy.
Best of luck and keep us posted ok.

I am who I am and accept my feelings wholeheartedly.

First let me say congratulations A1C @ 5.1 is great. As for me, pre-op mine was 11. I was on 5 shots a day and orals. At my last endo appt, I was told that my diabetes is no longer "uncontrolled" and was approved to not take any of the meds any longer. I was also told that we would continue to monitor that and adjust if necessary. If I were you, at my next appointment, I would ask if you could adjust or eliminate any of the meds that you are currently taking. See how tht goes over and I am sure that they will want to continue to monitor you closely.

When we believe, all things are possible!
Well, I was one of those people who was off of all meds by the time I left the hospital. Before surgery I was on 4 shots a day (1 Lantus and 3 Novolog) and when I was diagnosed my A1C was 9.7.
3 months ago it was 5.1 like you. (That was 3 months after surgery) Now at 6 months after surgery I am at 4.1. And my doctor did say the actual words that I was no longer diabetic and my sugars were bordering on low.
I also suggest talking to your doc about stopping the meds and seeing how you do (with close monitoring of course!). Plus 10 units of Lantus doesn't seem like a lot. I think I was on something like 50 maybe?
Good luck!

I was instructed to be off all diabetic meds when I left the hospital (other than BP). My A1C quickly went into the normal range and has remained that way until I became pregnant. I'm back on insulin, but strictly for the pregnancy. I was told that I should be able to come right back off after I deliver. Like Steph said, there is no cure, there is only control EVEN when you are off all meds. You'll still need to eat properly and exercise. Your current A1C is WONDERFUL and I'm wondering why you even need the Lantis at night. I'm sure your doc will be able to take you off the Lantis and Actos VERY soon! Like you said, you are just 4 months post op!

i went home on no meds, but i haven't had an A1C done. however, my fasting glucose has not been above 108. i believe my doctor told me that 85% of diabetics will no longer have to take medication following their rny surgery. i wish you the best. your results are very good, in spite of the fact that you're still on medication. try to look at it from the perspective that you're healthier than you were before.
