Drainage Tube?

It seems many of you had your surgeries at St. Vincent, Carmel.  Is it standard practice for their surgeons to leave the drainage tube for a week (RNY), or is it a case-by-case decision?  My surgeon will be Dr. Gupta. Any words of wisdom?

Strictly a case-by-case basis.  Depends on the surgeon's technique and conditions of surgery. I did not have one at all.

Becca, Welcome to OH! I had Dr. Gupta also and yes, for her, it's pretty routine. As was said, each surgeon has their preference as to what tube, how many (yes, some have more than one!), and for how long (1 week seems about 'normal' though for those who do have to have one). Her decision to use one with you is no indication that any thing is wrong...just Dr. Gupta's typical day at the office! Sherri

I HAD DR. JONES AND I HAD MINE IN FOR 5 DAYS.  IT WAS A LITTLE BOTHERSOME,  BUT WHEN IT WAS PULLED I FELT SO MUCH BETTER. I TOOK VERY LITTLE PAIN MEDS ONCE I GOT HOME. GOD LUCK....DEB

indybecca  i had dr diaz  and he also leaves a drain tube in for about a week. but i find that it maybe a bit of a bother it really does help in the long run and the day it comes out is like the best day next to your new birthday(surgery day) good luck with surgery and soon you will be a hoosier loser as well. vicki

I had surgery 4-13-07 Dr. Jones and the drain tube was removed 4 days later. I had zero complications in fact I went home after the surgery on 4-14-07.
