hi everyone, I'll be post op one week tomorrow. I have been blessed by not having any complications post op and having a good recovery. I just wish I could stop thinking about food. I know that during the pre-op process that it would be a HUGE change, but it has ben alot harder than I thought. All i can think about is food. pizza, burgers, fries, steak, basically everything I can't have. I have talked to my supportive husband about it, and he helps me get back in check. I know the whole reason I had the procedure is to not eat the way i did. But i'm having mini-meltdowns about it. Is this normal? will it go away? I just keep thinking that before surgery, FOOD was such a HUGE part of my life that I didn't realize was soo HUGE until now. I feel like I've had my blanky taken away. I keep thinking I just need to wait and see the weight come off and I won't think about the food, but right now that doesn't help. Does anyone have any suggestions? My husband thinks I'm crazy when I get upset during pizza hut commercials!! :) thanks Amanda

Amanda,  I wish I could offer you some help.  I am 2 weeks post op, but I had lapband.  I know the big thing that helps me is to eat alot of protein and Atkins Advantage protein shakes 3 times a day.  I am not sure how you diet works with RNY.  But I honestly think getting the protein really helps to keep the hungries in check.

Maybe, you wil have to just get up and leave the room during commercials.  I know that sounds crazy, but hey if it works. Pauletta

Just want to send you (( HUGS )) Amanda.  I'm having the opposite problem. Nothing at all sounds good and i get queasy at the smell or sight of food. My mom and husband have been eating my favorites in front of me and i thought it would bother me but truthfully it's just made me sick. Of course I'm not getting but a 1/3 of my fluid in without heaving and feeling really sick so I just want to tell ya if you need to talk I'm here!!! (( HUGS )) It gets better I KNOW it will :) Pretty soon you can have whatever you want and then you wont want it.

Amanda I had this problem right after surgery too... It was because I didn't feel good and those were the things that I turned to for comfort. Food was my cocaine. I went to therapy before and for a couple months after and it helped TONS... the funny thing was after i was able to get out and about and i could smell those things... they made me sick to my stomach... I don't even crave those things now.. i don't even think about them... Just remind yourself how bad those things are for you when you see the commercials and see if that works or eat sf popcicles every time you get that "head" hunger.. That worked for me too... Good luck

You have lost your blanky! It's difficult. Have you thought about trying some counseling to help learn some new methods of coping? I was in counseling before surgery, as required by my psych eval, and continued with it after surgery. It was pretty helpful.
