Someone explain protein drinks after surgery
Could someone or several people explain the protein drinks that you have to drink after having the surgery? I have heard so many different things. Basically--how much do you have to drink everyday? What types of drink can you have? I have heard something about milk mixed with powdered milk being used as a protein drink, is this correct? I also heard the sugar free carnation instant breakfast could be used--is that right? How long do you have to drink the protein drinks?
Thanks!
I liked the skim milk/powdered milk/SF Carnation Instant Breakfast combo. I also used Lo Carb Slim Fast, and like the Pure Protein Chocolate from GNC. I liked the Isopure (pre-mixed) over shaved ice.
My nut recommends the protein drinks during the first couple of stages post-op until you are able to get your protein requirements through "regular" foods. The drinks are a supplement to your diet and not intended to be you sole source of protein.

I can eat as much as I want...I just don't want much.
I'm ashamed of what I did for a Klondike bar...
Thanks for that info! I am glad to hear that the milk/powdered milk/carnation instant is an option cause some of the protein drinks I have looked at are VERY expensive!! How much of the protein drink do you have to drink a day? And do you have to drink the large volume of water in addition to that or can you include the amount of liquid in the total?
Some people count the protein drinks toward their water intake, some don't. I didn't count the milk/shake type toward my liquids, but I did count the Isopure. You will want to keep your water intake up toward the upper limits of what is recommended. Just think of it as the mechanism for flushing the fat out of your body.

I became lactose intolerant after surgery so I couldn't drink the powdered mixture... still can't hurts my belly (which sucks cause I LOVE Milk) I buy protein from wal mart that's 11.00 a container and it lasts me for 3 weeks. I use lactose free milk and put two scoops of that in there which gives me half of my protein intake for the day... I still can't eat much protein with my meals so this helps ALOT.... I flavor it with sugar free pudding mix and or jello depending on what i'm inthe mood for... I couldn't stand drinking that and only that so that's why i put two scoops in for 54 grams of protein ... you will have to find what works best for you after surgery because your body and taste buds will do a complete flip aroo
