Meeting with surgeon today

Well I am meeting my new surgeon, Dr. Gupta today.  I had to switch surgeons because they original one decided he was no longer going to do the RNY.  I have everything my insurance requires and it has been submitted, so as soon as the insurance sends that approval letter I should be able to set my date.  I am hoping to have the RNY in Sept. sometime This quitting smoking thing is really bugging me. I just have to keep thinking that if I really want this surgery bad enough, I have to quit.  Dr. Gupta requires people to stop smoking 2 months pre-op.  I have cut down and have a prescription for the Chantix. I am going to get that filled today.   Hope everyone has a great day! Jenny

Dr Gupta is  GREAT surgeon.  I believe things happen for a reason- maybe this is one of those "blessings in disguise" things! Good luck!

Quitting smoking will be hard, probably, but you can do this! Think positive, and about how healthy you will be without cigarettes, and weighing less!

Hi,  I just wanted to send my well wishes to you- you CAN do it! Think how much better you will feel and how breathing afterwards will be benefited by your stopping. A friend of my struggled and was so glad she gave it up-since the Dr. refused someone she knew because they did  NOT stop!   My Step Dad had lung cancer & he has told to get cinnamon sticks and put them in his pocket ( or where ever you keep them) and suck on them when the "urge" hits- it did work for him.  I am sending my best wishes to you- remember- every thing we give up brings us closer to a healthy life!!! I just went down to the Dollar store and bought cinnamon discs, butterscotch candy, blow pops, so hopefull that will work. I went to get the Chantix filled and found out my insurance doesnt cover smoking cessation drugs.  So now, I am on my own.  I CAN do this!

hi emtjenny~ So sorry you can't use the chantix...but if you can afford just one month of it...do it! I also have to stop smoking for 2 months pre surgery... HARD....but I got the chantix...and after 2 weeks of it I don't want a smoke. The 1 prescription has enough chantix for one month. I am on my final week and I don't think I could have done it as fast without the chantix.  also I went to walmart and bought the sugar free hard candy that is made by crystal Light...Its great!   Keep up the good work...and we will BOTH be healthier after surgery!

Lord, keep me in your will so I won't be in your way.

They WANT TO HELP you. Use the resources available.  We are stronger together.  The LRnY is easier with help.

Jenny, First, welcome to OH and to the Indiana Board!  I had Dr. Gupta and absolutely love her! I have my 3rd anual check-up on Sept. 20th. If you're in the hospital then, I'll stop in and see you!  I also had to quit smoking...and I am so glad I did! I was at a 3 pack a day habit for ~30 yrs. I quit on July 19th, and had my RNY on Sept. 17th. What I did was take Welbutrin. It's an anti-depressant that has the same make up as smoking cessation drugs..only insurance plans usually cover it. I also used the smoking patch for 1 month. Your regular doctor should have no problem writing you a script for both. They have the patch in a generic form. I was on the 14 mg/day strength. I got 1 box..I think it contained a two week supply. Every day I would cut off a little bit bigger peice of that day's patch and save it for later in the month. By the time 1 month rolled around, I was just putting little slivers of the patch on. That one box lasted me a month..with a few left over even. It has now been 3 years and I'm giving my left overs to my daughter...as a hint-hint..lol Good luck! Sherri

Meeting went well. I think my DH was board to death.  Dr Gupta was really nice.  She said that it is very possible to have my surgery in Sept. My goal is Sept 17 or 18.  I couldnt get over that there are no restrictions after returning home except for no lifting.  She said if you want to walk out of the hospital and go to Curves you can.  Surely you dont feel up to that, do you? Well, better go get my mind on something.  I have been almost 24 hrs without nicotine.  I am having a hard time, but I will get thru it. Jenny

I think it is possible.  The more you walk and keep active the faster you heal and the better you feel.  I am 15 weeks out and walking 15000 steps a day and wished I started earlier.  My weight lose has slowed down and working harder is helping to keep it going.  I think most will say they lost a great deal in the first 90 days so take advantage of that time to get your body retrained.  The big issue I had was getting out of bed without a mponkey bar to pull me up.  The belly belt they give you was a blessing for me.   Dr. Jones would have had be back to work in 3 weeks but I begged for the 4th week to get a vacation in during my son-in-laws off time.
