Yeap, been going real gray in the last year plus (basic aging, genetics and a lot of stress). Do any of you do your own color as opposed to having someone at a salon do it, as this is very pricey (been there done that)? What brand do you use, do you have any tips for doing it successfully, keeping your hair healthy in the long run?  Do you need any special tools to color your hair? Can I buy my product at Sally's Beauty Supply or do I have to get it at Osco or Walgreen's? I just want to cover the gray and stay with my basic hair color.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, All I do is buy what is on sale at Krogers that week. Just follow instructions and when done, RINSE for a extra long time. You want to get as much of the dye out as possible. Like the man saids, it ain't rocket science.

I buy my from Walmzrt. I just follow the directions on the pagelet that has the rubber gloves stuck on it. It is real easy! I have always done my own.

I'm afraid to say that I too buy whatever is on sale usually at Walgreens.  I just follow the directions on the box.  You go girl.. Wash that gray right out of your hair.  LOL

Hi Chris-I like L'Oreal Excellence or Preference because they come with an after color conditioner that you use for a few weeks and the Excelence has a pre-color treatment to keep from damaging your hair.  Either brand is usually on sale somewhere and Wally world carries it really competitively priced.  My girls don't even remeber my natural color!!  Have fun-Big hugs-Janet K

Thanks Janet, I just went on their web site and looked at the different products. I like the fact of the pre treatment idea so there is not damage. I will be only covering the gray, I do not want to get involved with lightening and my hair does not take well to lightening.

I use Natural Instincts by Clariol. I like them because it is a semi permanent dye and it doesn't dry out my hair as other harsh dyes do. I think I've tried all of them and I like NI the best.

You can buy dye at Target, Walgreens, Osco...I would recommend that you not go to sally's since this is your first time. It cost around 8-9 dollars for one box and a box has one dyeing kit. The dye will last for 4-6 weeks (semi permanent) or 5-8 weeks (permanent)

I don't know what color you're going for, but if you choose black, it will stay in your hair forever! Just make sure that you rinse out all the dye completely. Also, leave on the dye for the maximum time, don't cut your dyeing session short.

If you feel burning or your head itches really bad (like, take a rake to it) rinse it out IMMEDIATELY!! Since this would be the first time you are doing it at home, I would newspaper your little section where you're applying the dye, because you will be messy the first time. When you rinse your hair, use warm (not hot) water to rinse it out. When you are putting the conditioner in, use cool water to rinse out the conditioner.

I think that's all the information I can give you. If you have anymore questions, post it and I'll get back to you.

Have fun!
