HELP ME-My scale is about to ruin my life

Hi All-

My name is Trina. Im new to this place Im about 6 weeks post-op gastric bypass and to date I have lost about 34lbs.  Im doing fairly well I have been having some trouble getting in adequate amounts of protein, but finally found some protein I can tolerate from Isopure.

Here my problem, over the last week and a half,  I've only lost 2.5lbs.  Whats wrong?? Im not really eating much, I usually try and have a small amount of cereal in the morning, nibbles at lunch, maybe some soup or some shreds of lettuce and cheese, the chicken or meat in general at lunch is iffy at best (it seems to be easier to eat at home) and I try and drink as much water as I can but it seems like Im not losing anything anymore. Why?

Granted I haven't really been working out, my job consists of walking all day so I honestly haven't put forth the best effort to work out. but maybe thats the problem.  I know of others who never even walk but the weight just vansihed.  Am I just being impatient, or am I doing something wrong.

Hi Trina. The best advice we can give you is throw the scale out. It is not your friend!!

Seriously, you are doing find. The weightloss  sometimes stalls, and then it will start again. Are you getting in the amount of protein and water that your dr reccomends? If you aren't getting enough if could cause you to stop losing. Besides, your body is going through lots of adjustments and still needs time to heal. You will be fine.
W e all lose at our own rate.

Join us on our daily roll call. You will find we are all supportive and reallly care for each other.

Hugs on starting your new life.

Lisa

What do you mean only 2.5#s in the last week and a half? That is still good. That averages out to close to 10-12# a month. What most new POs do not realize is that there will be a slow down here and there, in fact it is very common at the 6 week time frame. Give your body a chance to catch up and readjust. You are not going to loose consistently and loose hell bent for election the whole time. That only happens the first few weeks for some and also how much a person has to loose overall.

Now, one big suggestion for you is that you PUT THE SCALE AWAY!!!!!!! Do you see what has happened to you with it, you have become a slave to it and the scale is EVIL. Only depend on the weigh ins at the doctor's office and how your clothing feels if you are loosing weight. I know that it is fascinating to see it go down put it also causing you stress.

I know that Christina P will come in here and tell you the same thing.

You should have started some exercise already. The walking that you do at work is not enough. You need an aerobic form of exercise Treadmill and when your doctor says it is okay to do it you can start some weight strengthening BarbellAs far as the walking you do in your job your body is used to that daily activity. You need a minimum of 30 minutes of aerobic exercise to get your heart rate up to help burn the calories. The weights will help tone and define your body. When you have more muscle it burns more calories.

ps - just wanted to add that you really need to get more protein in. I know that it is hard and you might not feel like eating but you need to nourish your body. I really had to concentrate on food and plan it into my day when I was at your stage PO. Follow your doctor's plan to the 'enth degree. If you are having trouble with food or protein then get in contact with Dr Cahill's office and see what they say.

REMEMBER TO STAY AWAY FROM THE SCALE, in fact give it to someone for a short while so you are not hopping on it all the time. What I did with mine was put it in the garage. I literally have to go outside to go into my garage as I cannot access it from a service door in the house. That helped a lot.

Thank you.  I hear what you guys are saying, I pruposely didn't step on the scale today and will get it out of my house.

The protein thing has been and continues to be somewhat of a struggle, Ive always been quite a picky eater loosening a tad as Ive gotten older but still certain things just don't go down, I got the Isopure and have been drinking that.  I try and have something high in protein for dinner since this is the only meal I can actually sit down and eat properly.

I work the oncology dept for a pretty large group, we have a large patient base and lunch is usually not something we get. So even if I bring my lunch I may have 10 mins and I can't eat that fast now, so its just trying to find some kind of balance.

But the scale spent its last night in my bathroom

Trina,
I have to agree with Christina, I think you need more protein and even though you walk all day you need an exercise program.  2.5 lbs is great. I'm 5 months out and if I loose 1/2 a lb every two weeks I'm happy.  I know it all depends on where we start, where we are. I'm a serious plateau-er. You may be too. My Dr. told me that I may loose a little plateau, loose a little plateau.  I know it's frustrating but your doing the right thing. Talking to others who have gone thru this is the best thing. It means you aren't hiding with a bag of chips and you have your head in the right place.  Try to get more protien...I love South Beach breakfast bars they have 10 gms of protien and are low carb and I use them when I need a quick meal replacement and can't get a protien shake in. They are also easy to carry.  Best wishes.

You are doing great! You are doing nothing wrong.

You will need to increase your protein, water and exercise. If you had surgery at LCOM, give Tony a call. If you had surgery at STH, give Tina a call.
