OT - Auto GPS units

Dave and I are going to treat ourselves to a new fandangled GPS for our car. We want to get it before we go to KY for our 35th anniversary.

I have been doing some research on Garmin as I have a Garmin GPS pedometer and love it.

What unit do any of you have, brand, model etc. What do you like or dislike about the unit and which unit would you have gotten instead. I know of two different brands with them being Tom Tom and Garmin. Enlighten us regarding this gadget.

I have the service on my cell phone and have it set up so I only have to pay for it when I use it which is almost not at all. If you get one, beware of setting a "home" setting on it because if it gets stolen, they will know where you live.

Thank you for the info on the cell phone but I do not think we want to add another service to either of our phones. We are trying to cut down on expenses with me loosing hours and Dave not getting any compensation yet. I am also not sure I would want to look at a small screen for an 8+ hour trip to KY.

My brother has a garmin, and loves it.  They went for a drive one day and got lost, he put in home, and it brought them right home.  Let me know what you get, now that hubby and I can travel, we are thinking about one also.

My sister has a Garmin. She gets lost driving down the driveway.

It helps her out. It talks to her if ou turn on the talking thing. Its funny, you can go online and download different voices like a hillbilly, cartoon character, etc..

I would suggest putting out a little more for a better one. Her Garmin automatically updates every year or so to compensate for new roads, etc... (I'm not sure of how often.) She can get upgrades for different countries.

Hers will know if you are going under the speed limit. So it expects you to be in construction, and suggests a different route.

You can ask it where_____ (what ever you want?) and it will tell you where the closest one is.

Dave, thank you. Could you ask her what model she has? I think most of the Garmin models have the Where am I feature. Yes, some of them also have the voice downloads.

We got ours at Dicks, and it is a Garmin. I love it. I will bring it in this afternoon.

We did not get to talk about your GPS. What exact model do you have?

Ours is the Garmin Nuvi too. The only place where it did nogood was in the Smoky Mts. It kept saying it couldn't locate the satilite. But then, our cell phones didn't work in the park either
