Fruit, veggies, exercise/lowcarb??????

I have noticed many conversations here include having protein with low carb content.  My nut at the last visit was again pounding away at the old standards of more veggies, starches, fruits and exercise as the way to lose weight.  At my weight I do not think these are correct.  At the seminar I went to for the Kane group Dr. Guske answered a question about exercise from an attendee that also seemed to indicate he did not have any great interest in seeing larger individuals exercising.

I am wondering what advice others are getting from their docs both pre and post surgery.

So you have been forgiven?

Randy, I cannot comment much on the foods your NUT is pounding away at you on. As far as the exercise, Dave could hardly walk 200 yards without being out of breath or in pain like many large men or women. There are cardio exercises that a person with limited mobility can do while sitting in a stable chair. You are giving the upper body a workout and getting the heart rate up if the person is not on a beta blocker that will inhibit a goal number. A person that is on a beta blocker can still do the exercises but they will not be able to get the heart rate up past a certain number.  My doc's office works with these types of individuals on a weekly basis and has equipment for a person to sit and exercise. There are also videos or DVDs you can buy with a title similiar to "chair aerobics". You might be able to Google that. They have them for the seniors that are not real mobile.

Of course all this type of exercise should be under the care of a physician or excercise physiologist so you can be monitored and the patient remains safe.

I'm confused - are you wondering if our Dr.s are recommending not excersising?

The plan at my surgeons is excersising 1) cardio up to 50 minutes 5x's a week and 2) strenght training.

Plus we are only allowed protein (if it had a mother or came out of a mother) then you can have it for the first 2 months.  Then you can add non-starch veggies one at a time.  Then at 3 month you can add fruit.  NO carbs until 75% of excess weight is lost.

Hope that helps.

Randy is saying that for a larger individual to not exercise pre op especially unsupervised. Dr Guske at the seminar was saying not to for a larger person. There are two camps on the subject.

One of the reasons they push protein so much in post ops is our malabsorption rates for RNY'ers.  Because we do not absorb everything, protein is the most critical thing and it is essential for maintaining energy and overall health.

Our needs for nutrients post op are 40% - 50 % protein, 25 -30 % carbs and  25-30 % fats.  There are good carbs and bad carbs.  They are referring to the good carbs for us.  Protein also can be high in calories as compared to low carbs veggies.

That is probably why your nut is pushing the veggies and fruits.  Most nutrition plans are based on the food pyramid with the most calories coming from whole grains and starches, fruits and vegetables and no more than 2 - 3  three ounce servings of protein a day.

A serving of protien (meat) is the size of a deck of cards so that is not very much and you will be hungry if you limit the protein you eat to a standard serving.  Therefor you need to  get bulk (filler) foods from somewhere and your veggies are a good source because they are low calorie and have a variety of nutrient that your body needs,

At this point if you cannot tell that I have a degree in Foods and Nutrition and Child and Family Development, that is where the lecture is coming from.  Sorry.  Maybe too much info.
