One Year--and 183 Pounds--Down!
Thanks so much!
No, my surgeon does not require a pre-op diet to lose weight or shrink the liver (he's also a liver transplant surgeon, so I'm sure that's part of it.) My surgeon said if I was able to lose weight on my own then I wouldn't need to have weight loss surgery--I love that man! The day before surgery I was on liquids and then had a bowel cleanse, but that was it. No weeks of liquid diets, etc. My surgeon has worked on people 800+ pounds and still not required a pre-op diet.
My DS (duodenal switch) was done laparoscopically, with just a few small incisions. My recovery was a breeze. I credit pre-surgery workouts and the lap surgery for that.
Feel free to ask me anything here or via private message, if you prefer. It's part of my "paying it forward" philosophy about the amazing DS. I love my DS and the incredibly normal lifestyle it gives me. I have eaten every food I love since surgery and still lost 183 pounds, so I can relate to your hubbby's feelings about food.
For more info on the DS surgery, you can visit the DS board or www.dsfacts.com. Drs. Prachand and Alverdy at the University of Chicago do the DS. I chose to go to San Fran because my PCP had a ton of experience with that particular surgical group.
Take care,
Nicolle
