HIATAL HERNIA???

What is it? How does it feel? Can you still have surgery? Any info apprecitaed :)

I am assuming you are talking about a Gastric Hiatal Hernia?

But it is where part of the upper stomach slips through the esophageal hold in the diaphram and makes a little pouch (Kinda like a lap band) on top of the diaphram.

It has all kinds of symptoms like problem swallowing, upper abdomen pain when eating and shortness of breath if it is big enough to interfere with the lungs.

I would assume they would still be able to do the surgery.

Actually, I would assume they would be more likely to do the surgery to bill twice the work to the insurance company.

I had a hiatal hernia, but didn't know it until I had gastric bypass.  The symptoms were pretty much what Dave explained.  My doctor explained to me before surgery that they have you sign a consent to repair it, in the event they find one.

I had that, and still had my RNY, which actually solved the problem.

Having a hiatal hernia should not keep you from having surgery. Mine was fixed when I had my RNY. A doctor will usually say that s/he might be able to totally fix it but there really isn't any guarantee. What will happen many times when you have this type of hernia you will have heart burn, AKA as GERD. I had it really bad and was on Prevacid for it. I have not had any problems since surgery with GERD.
