Topic: RE: State of Iowa Employee - Treatment of morbid obesity is not covered on BCBS?
Thank you for your response, I had gone to the initial required seminar with my (hope to be) bariatric surgeon and had given them all of my insurance information then for them to check and make sure it would be covered, I didn't hear anything back stating it wasn't ... but didn't get a green light either so I am just a bit anxious I guess to find out, once I know that it's all covered I am ready to kick things into high gear! As you can tell I am in the just beginning stages of going through this, so I have tons of questions. :) Thank you for your helpfulness, I have emailed both wellmark as well as my HR Rep in Des Moines to find out if Bariatric Surgery is covered under my insurance plan.

Topic: RE: surgery in Mexico need fills in Iowa/Illinois!!
If I were  you,  I'd make good & sure you find someone before leaving that will do your fills for you. Many doctors don't want to mess with anyone that they didn't personally do the surgery on. Too many problems with liability, with being held accountable for someone else's work, even someone as well respected as your surgeon. They are busy with their own patients & don't need to take on any additional headaches. I wish you luck. I know that this is the only way some people can get it done. It's too bad it's come to that. Insurance companies really should wise up. Dixie

Jen, Which Wellmark do you have?  [ Edited:  Sorry, I was re-reading and see that you have BlueAccess, so none of my info will apply] I am a teacher (state of Iowa).  I have Wellmark Alliance Select BlueRx Preferred Iowa Governmental Health Care Plan.  Obesity Surgery is covered in my plan (page 38 in the manual).  I had to call U of I to preregister for my initial consultation last night.  The lady I spoke with said that my plan paid well and I should have no problem with it. Do you have a copy of your coverage manual?  If not, call the customer service number on your insurance card.  They are very friendly and helpful at Wellmark.  At least the ones I've dealt with.  Good luck. Tonya, I wish I had an answer for you.  Is there any way you can get a copy of the insurance plan?  Maybe they read your age wrong.  Ask your Dr.'s office if there is anything they can do to help you or if they can advise you on what to do.  Good luck with this.  Let us know what happens. Karla

I was just checking out my benefits as listed on the wellmark website to see what I need to have prior to approval ... going through my list of information I came across this statement under "Other Services" Treatment of morbid obesity is not covered.  Anyone that is a State of Iowa Employee have bariatric surgery? I hope it's not a problem that I posted this in the Iowa boards and not the Insurance boards as I am hoping fellow Iowans will read here and respond first. Thanks. I have BCBS Blue Access if that helps.

Topic: Help!

Hey everyone...okay I am in need of some assistance.  I have IA Medicaid and am trying to get this surgery.  I did EVERYTHING they required in order to get approval  and I get a denial letter today stating that I do not meet the set age required by Iowa Medicaid Enterprises in order for approval for gastric bypass surgery?  What does this mean?  Anyone heard of this?  If this was the case, why didnt the insurance dept in my surgeons office let me know this...so that way if I wasnt even going to get approved on that alone..that would have save a whole lot of time, you know?  Please let me know..any insight on this would be greatly appreciated!

Topic: surgery in Mexico need fills in Iowa/Illinois!!
I am having surgery in Mexico in a few days and am super pumped because I have met many, many wonderful people on this site that had it done at this same place. However they live way to far away or in different states than I do. I am looking for a doctor here in the general region where I can travel to either Iowa or Illinois because I live close enough to go to either Peoria, Chicago, Iowa City, Des Moines. Does anybody know of a doctor that will perform the fill?? If you have had it done this way or know of anybody please let me know!! thanks!!
