Topic: Moving to Sioux City....Medicaid questions! Please help!
Hello everyone,
My name is Sheri and I am going to be moving to either to Sioux City area or to Vermilion SD area...not entirely sure yet. Anywho, I currently have an IL medical card for myself and my 6 year old son. My issue is this, my fiancee who is actually the one who has been offfered a job in sioux city, is reliant on anti seizure medication for a brain tumor (he has had 6 weeks of radiation treatments for it). Becuase of some issues with his last employer (they really put the screws to him!!!) and the disability insurance, he was forced to take out what we thought was cheaper insurance--boy were we wrong! We checked everywhere we could and the company seemed perfectly ligit, but as it turns out it was a ripoff. His required medications are going to now cost about $600 for a 30 day supply. Obviously thats a problem for most people--including us. We're already struggling and this may prove to be catastrophic if he doesnt get his medications!!! I spoke with my caseworker here in IL and she told me that if we got married I could add him onto my medical card and then he would have eligibility for help too. However, we are moving out to Sioux City next month and Im really not sure if we could qualify in Iowa. We are a family of three, and he will gross about $2300 a month with this new job. I will not have any income for a while, until we get settled and I can find a job and child care for my son. Can anyone here please please give me any advice in how to find out if we could qualify in IA like here in IL? Please help!!! We are very very excited to be moving, but if we dont get him some insurance with the ability to get his medications, we could lose this upcoming job...and he will certainly have grand mawl siezures again...

Gosh Tanya, sorry to hear this! To get the requirements for my insurance company I looked up the benefit information from my employer (they have ours online) and also called the insurance company to get the specifics. My employer has a requirement of being at least 18 years old. I'd call and find out. Just remember that just because you got denied now doesn't mean you can't appeal!

Topic: RE: surgery in Mexico need fills in Iowa/Illinois!!
This is something you need to have lined up BEFORE you have the surgery. Most good surgery programs will NOT do the fills on people who they didn't place the band in or who were not referred from another program.
I realize Mexico is the "place to go"--but you don't get the follow up care that is absolutely crucial to be successful.
As for a previous reply about the Iowa City doctors--they don't place and will not care for someone with a band placed, just so you know.
Good luck on finding someone!

Topic: RE: State of Iowa Employee - Treatment of morbid obesity is not covered on BCBS?
Yeah I just found out the same thing Jody :( I have to wait till open enrollment before I can switch, do you know which of those 2 plans would be the best considering I carry coverage for my son as well? I picked the plan I have now because all of my premiums for myself and him as well are 100% paid for by the State.

The state of Iowa offers multiple plans ... some of them cover MO and surgery, and some don't. It looks like the indeminty plans cover it (program 3plus and deductible 3 ) . If the one that you have doesn't cover it - you might want to switch plans on the next open enrollment period.

Hey Jen..I was reading your post and even tho I really cant offer any advice about the insurance part, I did notice you are just starting out on this journey. I'm not sure of your age but I'm 25 and am finally getting ready to get approved or denied again. *lol* I just got my denial yesterday but I talked with my surgeon's office who told me that they will be calling my insurance next week on my behalf to hopefully get this straightened out. Anyway, just wanted to let you know if you need anything or wanna talk, let me know!
