Sulfa Drugs (Septra) Yes or No?

I have been pretty sick with a horrible UTI (Urinary Tract Infection). Yes, again! Instead of Levaquin they put me on Septra. Because of the size of the pill (augh!) they did a liquid mixture for me. I just picked it up and what has me questioning is the warnings and side effects listed. Diarrhea, nausea, abdominal or stomach pain/cramping... Tell Doctor if you have a history of "cetrain intestinal conditions (e.g., malabsorption)" ....well....duh? I called the Doctor's office (my regular PCP is out and a doctor I've never seen prescribed this) and they said that if I had a question about it I should call the surgeon's office (who did my RNY)! What Would You Do?? Patti

Patti Call your surgeon's office to find out if this is a safe drug to take. Sulfa preparations are very hard on a normal stomach. Hope this helps Carolyn

Called my surgeon's office. Their new policy - call with all new oral prescriptions. Anyway, Dr. Steinberg gave the all clear. Drink the liquid medication, follow with a few sips of water then follow with a couple of soda crackers. Now, if only the infection goes away as fast! Patti

Patti, I am 2 yrs post op/ I still have terrible uti's sometimes. I am allergic to the sulfa drugs, but I didn't know this until I had this surgery and had to take something for the uti's. Drink lots and lots and lots of water. I have drank wanter sometimes til I feel sick from it. But your body needs the water. That will help with the uti. My doctor's moto is you should take your water bottle where ever you go. I have a huge gallon jug of water under my desk at work. I try to fini**** off each day. I even take a small bottle to church with me and sneak a few sips during the service. I still depend on my surgeron's office because my regular family doctor cannot answer quetions about the bypass surgery and what is good or bad for me where that is concerned. Hope this helps. Teresa
