Before surgery I would have leg cramps maybe once a month or every two months, or I could go forever and not have one. Since surgery, I have been experiencing them at least once a week. But last night was a first...I had two, yes, two leg cramp episodes. Lately they seem to be deep in my leg. Anyone got any ideas?? Is it that I am not getting enough water?

Hi Norma, A lady from my support group said at 3 weeks out she developed a blood clot. I am not sure if a clot would feel like a cramp. When I started experiencing leg cramps, my doc thought it could be from not enough protein. I think it may be from the excersize I am now doing. I've also heard it could be from low calcium or potassium. I think a call to the doc may be in order. There's no reason for you to be suffering. I know leg cramps are exrtemely painful. Good luck, Barb

I was having leg cramps when I was an early post-op... mine was from low potassium. I was told to eat atleast 2 bananas per day... back them I could do well to get in a half on one banana per day.... the doctor said we would monitor my potassium, and if if kept on being low, he would put me on potassium... it finally went away, and we never had to do anything further. Before surgery I had to take quinine every night for leg cramps that were so severe every night... I would cry for hours.... that all seems to be resolved now as well.... Susan

Just an update...I did call my doctors office this morning, and the nurse said that it could be from low protein, low potassium, low magnesium, or not enough water. She talked with the doctor, and he suggested that I have blood work done....so off to Emory Dunwoody outpatient lab for that. Hopefully, I will hear back from the nurse tomorrow. Norma

You probably need more potassium. Tami
