Help in the state of Georgia
I have just found out that the State Merit System in Georgia has done the same thing as the Wisconsin government, but they did not tell us. If you work for this system please be aware of this. I have filed a complaint with the insurance commisioner, but I don't know how helpful this will be. I welcome any help I can get. I have BCBS HMO Blue Choice.
Hey Sandra,
I was with the ga. state merrit system for 5 years. I worked for the department of corrections. They will not do wls. The funny thing is that 65% of the people working for the state are overweight, whether it be midly or severe. I quit my job to go to a b/s job thinking they would cover the surgery( another long story my profile says it all) so basically I am at sqaure one. I think it is a shame. The new commissioner put a fitness center and hired a personal trainer for employees. His comment was there are too many obese employees employed and we need to get in shape-Go figure. I've thought about complaining but came to the realization it will take more than one voice alone.
Thanks everyone for your responses. The funny thing is they covered it until 7-1-05. I have a co-worker who had it earlier this year and one who had it in June and BCBS covered it. When I called and spoke to them they stated to me that they did until 7-1-05 then State Merit asked for this particular exclusion. I have already consulted a lawyer and I plan on fighting them as hard as I can. I'll keep you posted.
This is the insurance commisioners web site for anyone interested.
Also I read in the AJC today that they are saving a bundle, $35 million+ on that new smoker's surcharge they are charging people, so I'm really not in the mood to hear that this surgery is costing them too much money, because in the long run it will save them money.
