Do these get in your system quicker than the regular B12 pill form, and would it be ok for me to start taking them now maybe 2 a weeks since I have NO energy now, or will my body become immune to them before surgery if I take them now? I have took the B12 pills before and nothing happened, I need something to get in my system quick. Melissa

As far as 'getting in your system quicker' yes I think sublingual will do that faster then the pill form, but the difference is only a matter of a few hours really. Post op I don't recommend pill form b-12 for absorption reasons. Before surgery your body should absorb the sublingual the same as the pill form. After surgery, sublingual (or a shot) is the preferred method because RNY bypasses the part of your small intestines which absorbs b-12. You cannot become 'immune' or resistant to taking vitamins or minerals whatever your body doesn't need, it will get rid of. I started taking a multivitamin before surgery figureing it can only help boost your bodys ability to heal after surgery. If you want to start taking them early it can only help Kia 284/209/155 ish

Thanks Kia, What form of vitamin supplement do you take? I am currently taking pre-natal, even tho I am not pregnant. I am going to go ahead a buy the sublinguals today, but what about calcium, can you take it to early, and what kind would be best? Thanks, Melissa

I take 2 Meg Vita Gel from Vitamin World, 2 (generic from Sams club) Calcium Citrate caplets, one iron gell (ferrous Fumarate) nad one super b complex from Nature Made every day. I can swallow pills (even large ones) whole so that about covers all my pills and vitamins. Oh, I also get a b-12 shot once a month (1000 micrograms). The prenatal vitamins are a good choice lots of goodies in more quantities Kia 284/209/155 ish

Melissa, I second what Kia said. As a nurse, vitamins and minerals are absorbed as you needed, and then excreted through your urine for what you dont need. Also, if you want to take the b12 early, it would be fine..might give you alittle energy. I did find out that the sublingual did not work for me so I take 1cc every other week of the b12 in shot form. Hope this helps, and the more boost you can give your body before hand, the better off you are after surgery. D'Lynn 232/181

Thanks, D'Lynn, I found out that the B12 Pill form never did anything in the past for me, so the sublinguals, may not, but I will try them and see. How long after taking them will I notice if they are working? Melissa

Hi, I was told that you only need to take Sublingual B12 once to twice a week, and that any more than that was a waste. Walmart carries this for about 4 dollars a bottle. I asked my nutritionist if I could take it more ofter and she said: Don't waste your money. Your body does not need it. Also, on the Calcium with Vit D added (1000-1200 mg) per day. i had to start post-op since my level was kind of low. I hated all I bought chewables and liquid( which doctor said was not best to do liquid). Bariatric Advantage has a lonzenger (sp?) in Cinnamon and mint. I ordered these and they are awesome. (online or by phone order) I thought it was a gimmick at first since it specializes in Bariatric patient needs, but it is not. I got them within a few days and love it. It is like a little treat. They melt in your mouth vs gagging them down. I highly recommend these. I know everyones doc and nutritionist is probably different, but thought I would share what I was told. Thanks, LmW

Melissa, My doctor has me self inject b-12 at home, in the beginning it was twice a month, now that I am 8 mths its onlyonce a month and it gets into my system faster and helps me with my energy level. I didn't think I could do it but my nurse showed me how and its not that hard. I take enough medicine (pills) for my muscle disorder daily, tired of pills do not mind 1 shot once or twice a month. Talk with your doctor and see it this way can help you.

First you need to ask your surgeon or nutritionist how much B12 you should take. Yes I use the walmart B12 sublingual made by Rexall. I put it under my tongue till it desolves. This is better for us. I take it every other day. I feel this is better than the monthly shot since I feel like it keeps it in my system on a regular. I never noticed the difference in the shots though. My sublinguals are 500mcg each. Also when you have the surgery you can not take regular Calcium remember that. It has to be Calcium Citrate.... Our body absorbs this better than regular calcium that our bodies can not absorb. You can get this from walmart made by Spring Valley. I started with the Viactiv chews after surgery since you can not take a pill after surgery but once I could swallow a pill I started taking the Calcium Citrate. Hope this helps... NAT

Thanks Nat, I bought me some of the 500 mcg sublingual by Rexall today, I am going to start out taking them every other day. I found out that the B-COMPLEX I was taking only had 25 mcg per 2 tablets thats probably why it never helped me with energy. Melissa
