Post Op Nutrition--need help

I was assured that we would have nutritional help and I called my nutritionist and she was very vague and not too helpful. I am 4 weeks out as of tomorrow, and I am a little worried, I have lost almost 30 lbs, which is great, but I am having a really hard time, I cannot find a protien that I can tolerate. However, the more "normal" I eat, the better I feel. I have not dumped and nothing has made me vomit except when I was trying to adhere strictly to protein, I ate 1 bite too many of fish and then once of chicken. Pretty much the minute I start to fill full, I stop. My problem and question to my fellow WLS'ers is....If I am taking my vitamins and drinking all water, crystal light decaf coffee, etc...I have been eating egg/cheese, etc. but I have eaten like 3 chik fil a nuggets as a meal..2 oz of pork tenderloin and all is well, but does that mean something is wrong/ I feel like I should be sick or having a hard time eating or something..it kind of worries me. I am having some lil pains around my stomach today, but I did a LOT of house work yesterday and I feel like I over did it. I just want to be sure I am eating right. My nutritionist said no carbs at all until after 6 weeks, and to add soft veggies, etc after 5 weeks, but lentil soup has veggies in it, so I am so confused..then I see people on the board that are told to eat KFC mashed potatoes and saltines..some one enlighten me on their opinions. I was a self pay and the very last thing I want to do is slow down my weight loss, but I also want to stay healthy as I loose..any suggestions? thank you all so much!! hugs to all! kimberlee

Kimberlee, I too was a self pay and I do not want to do anything wrong as well. I'm 3 months post-op and I still have a hard time eating. I have found that shrimp has 23 grams of protien and tuna has 17 grams. You really have to look. There is a web site that I will find again that has some puddings that you can buy that have 20 grams of protien in them. They taste good! Where did you have your surgery done at? I had mine done in Alabama, it was a lot cheaper there than here in Atlanta. I have now lost a total of 98 pounds in 3 months. Keep up the good work and do not worry. Just make sure to take all of your vitamins and drink as much water as you can. You can also drink TEA as well. This also helps in the water intake. You can e-mail me at [email protected] if you have any other questions and need help. Take care, Dorothy (Jeannie)

Wow, 98 pounds in 3months, incredible.. I've lost 62 in 10 weeks and thought that was good, I've hit a plateau apparently as the scale has not moved in a week... did you hit a plateau it doesn't sound like it.... congratulations

Hi. I am from Clermont, GA. I seen your message on the message board. Who is your nutritionist? Is it Jenny? I've only dealt with her the two meeting I had with her before the surgery and the one after while I was still in the hospital. I have not had dumping syndrom yet. Although I am only 1 1/2 weeks out. I am eating my protein. I have not had a problem with it. My only concern is that I can eat a little more than what Jenny has told me to eat. Are you going to obesity solutions? If you are there is a nurse there named Tracy. She is 10 weeks out. I talked to her for 45 minutes the other day. She was very, very helpful. Why don't you give her a call. She will tell you anything you need to know. Just thought I would throw that out.

gOSH Kim, I just got your message. Thanks so much for the info. Yeah, it was Jenny. She was great at the meetings, but I just found her to be somewhat vague when I called. Who was your doctor? I am glad to meet someone that is real close. I live in North hall, so we are close. Have you been to any of the meetings? I will call the nurse, Tracy. I am 5 weeks out, and I find I am hungry at normal intervals. I would def. like to be getting more protein supplement, but I just cannot gag it down. How are you doing? I would love to see how you are doing. Anyway, please write me and let me know howyou are doing..thanks again.. Kimberlee

I had my surgery Oct. 16th & haven't had the protein problems others have had. I bought a supplement powder mix at Costco that is choc. flavored. I also got a lot of protein supplements off of www.bariatriceating.com I've lost 26 lbs & I'm feeling great! DON'T do the mashed potatoes!! I asked Dr. Richard because my girlfriend told me that's all she ate for 6 weeks. He explained to me that potatoes (carbs) are going to go through your pouch a whole lot faster & make you feel hungry sooner. If you eat protein, like chicken or fish, you're going to feel fuller longer because it's taking longer to go through the pouch. Made sense to me! Maybe Jenny was having a busy day. Give her a call again. She has a lot of people to help. Good luck to you!!! Maybe we'll meet at a support group meeting. I plan on attending soon. Peace, Margie
