I have just began my journey of fighting my obesity. But I have already run into a brick wall. I currently have Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia as an Employee of the State of Georgia. When I obtained the coverage, they covered it with Medical Necessity but NOW ALL BARIATRIC SURGERIES ARE EXCLUDED FROM MY POLICY. I am now tyring to obtain my own coverage outside of my employer. Does anyone have any suggestions of insurances companies. Please help.

No! I do not know of any insurance company's here, but my insurance did not cover my operation. I was told by my company that if it was medicaly necessary it would be covered. But the answer I still got from the insurance company was a BIG NO! I had my surgery in Alabama and it was a lot cheaper, and they offer away to get financing. Check out this web site: ( Freemanandcompany.com ) here you can find the numbers that you will need to contact them. If you have heard of Carnie Wilson, the same surgeron that done her operation done his as well. Yes, this doctor under went the same operation so he really knows what it is like first hand. Hope this helps some! Dorothy

What tpye of surgery did you have and how does it work with payments when you go for you checkups? Do they give you some many visits that was covered in the overall cost?

All of my follow-up visits are covered in the total cost. He is really a wonderful Doctor I really liked him. I even met some other people that have used him as well. My surgery was just done on Jluy 27,2006 and I was done Lap. My heal time was really great and I was back to work 2 day's after my drain tubs were removed. Doctor Freeman is really a great person. Like I told you he has had the operation as well. So he knows first hand on the out come and what we will go through.

Was it covered by your insurance and what was the total cost? What tubes had to be drain? How much have you lost so far? Do they have a website?

Yes, unfortunately, I have been under two different BCBS policies, and both turned me down..We had to take a second mortgage and I also got some help from carecredit.com It really is rediculous that we have to go these links to prevent BCBS from paying for all our other co-morbities..you know? Dont give up, took me over 2 years to finally get the funds. I am just 3 weeks out, and feeling fine, and showing progress. Just keep trying until you find your answer. No private health or individual plan that I know will pay for obesity surgery, most have specific exclusions, whether or not it deemed medically necessary.

Hey Lashell, I had BCBS PPO and finally wore them down. My policy had an exclusion. Well it did but it didn't. They told me my employer "opted out" of the bariatric coverage. I got a notarized letter from my husband's HR department stAting they were unaware of this clause. So their next story was they denied me because of lack of medically supervised diet soo I did this then they said medical records were missing- sent them again. Then they had to approve me. I learned it all depends who you get on the phone with BCBS of Alabama. When I see someone post that it is excluded from their plan I wonder if it is excluded the way mine was. Just to deter you from going after it. I hope that is the case with yours and you can beat them. Lorie
