Hi guys... update
Well thank-you for your prayers guys.... I think they are working.
I went to the hospital as Wild Cat Lady said and they did put in the picc and send me home. My home healthcare nurse just left here and I had a bag of potassium put into my picc. It took four hours to go through. wow!
That's long!
Anyway, while I was at the hospital I puked and was feeling badly still, I suddenly realized that I forgot to take my Carafte and prevacid before I left the house AND forgot to bring them with me. So I thought I would just take them when I got home.
We got home at around 2:30 that afternoon and I was exhausted but very hungry so I tried eating a little homemade potato salad. I figured since it had egg in it (protein), it would be good. Also my dietician told me to try and eat some potato w/ protein because potatos can settle upset stomachs.
Well any way I got down a couple teaspoons and to my amazement I wasn't heaving my guts out! I also was able to sip some water. After that I took a nap. When I woke it was late afternoon and I still had not taken the meds. I ate about 2 more tsp. of the pot. salad and then was able to eat a popsicle! I was stunned. This would have killed me the day before. SOOO, then I got to thinking, maybe it's the Carafate that is making me so much sicker. I was nauseated a lot before I started taking it but it got ten times worse after the doc put me on it. So? Maybe we are onto something here. I did not take it again today just to see. I have been sick but not as sick. I ate a few nibbles while I have been typing this and am gettig pretty sick but not heaving yet. I am going to lie down and just wait and see what happens the rest of the day without carafate.
I still do not regret the surgery. If I am sick for 6 -8 weeks, I consider that a flash in the pan. A few weeks of misery spent out of the rest of my life? Totally worth it to get healthy to me. I keep focusing on that and thinking that in 2 or 3 years I will barely remember this.
Thanx for the prayers,
Sallykate
Sallykate, I gotta tell ya, that Amy B. drives me NUTS because she always seems to say just what I want to!! I was also struck by your positive attitude! Lately I seem to be seeing a LOT of negative thinking and I try to combat it because it's so contagious and makes people feel bad. You are a positive, shining light and you CAN do this! Good for you!
My question, though, is what is Carafate used for and is it bad that you're not taking it? Can something else be prescribed for whatever effects that won't make you sick?
Happy Thanksgiving, Sallykate!!
Jan

Awe thanx for the encouragement Jan andd everyone else for that matter! I do not like negativity either and agree with you Jan that it is contagious. There is always something good in EVERY cir****tance!
As for the Carafate, funny you should ask, I just got off the phone with the pharamacist and we talked about it's uses and substitutes. My surgeon prescribed it in case I have an ulcer. From my understanding, carafate is not abosrobed and simply coats the tummy. It is for wounds like ulcers. (very chalky) I am not sure what my surgeon would replace it with but the pharmacist said that if it is actually making really nauseous, I could be allergic to it.
SOOO, here is my plan. I have not taken it in 2 days and now I will take it today and see if I feel worse again. Perhaps we will figure out if it has anything to do with the problem at all.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING ALL!!
